BILLERICAY  2  HORNCHURCH  2

Hornchurch made no changes in the starting line up, though Tambeson Eyong came into the squad in place of Phil Starkey, who is still injured.

For Billericay, goalkeeper Billy Lumley was making his debut.

In near heatwave conditions, but on an unusually good surface, Hornchurch almost took an early lead when a clearance by Billy Lumley cannoned back off George Purcell, narrowly going wide of the post.

Purcell was a constant threat to the home defence, though he sometimes received little support, and when he gained possession in midfield he ran through, but hit his shot too high and over the bar.

Ade Yusuff then conceded a free kick, for which he was booked, and Dave Collis floated the ball towards goal, where Inigo Echepare confidently punched clear.

Derek Duncan fired a free kick over the bar, whilst Billericay went close from another free kick, conceded by Alex Bentley. Collis played he ball towards the far post, it was headed back, and a spectacular overhead kick dropped onto the roof of the net.

Defences were on top for most of the first half, and chances were few, until RICKY SAPPLETON, who had been booked two minutes earlier, finished off a well directed pass from Dave Collis to give Billericay the lead.

Hornchurch had an opportunity to draw level when Derek Duncan’s free kick found Chris Bourne, but his header went wide of the post.

the first half was drawing to its conclusion – three minutes were signalled for stoppage time – when, in the final few seconds of those three minutes, Hornchurch were awarded a corner on the left, to the disgust of the home manager. Lumley rose to catch the ball, then fell over, with Elliot Styles also on the ground. Inexplicably three home players descended en masse towards Rickie Hayles. The linesman and referee consulted at length, and, after two minutes of intense conversation, a yellow card was waved at Ricky Sappleton, quickly followed by a card of the red variety. Hayles was booked thirty seconds later, and half time was then indicated.

Carl Rook came on for Yusuff at half time, whilst Billericay introduced Javlon Campbell for James Robinson.

And both teams could have scored within a minute of the restart. A long throw by Jeffrey Imudia caused a few problems before Inigo turned the ball out for a corner. Inigo then caught the ball as it came over, and played it deep up field, where Chris Bourne rounded Imudia and lobbed the keeper, only for the ball to rebound off the crossbar.

Tambeson Eyong then came on for Billy Coyne, and he was quickly in the action, slotting the ball through to Bourne, who ran through but fired his shot over the bar.

A Hornchurch attack then turned into disaster when a free kick was awarded, the ball was played long up the field, where JAVLON CAMPBELL gained possession, took a few steps forward, and hit the ball hard past Echepare to give the home side an unexpected two goal lead.

Hornchurch now pressed forward, with Rook prominent in winning the high balls that came his way, and GEORGE PURCELL pulled a goal back with a crashing volley from outside the area.

Michael Spencer came on for Joey May, and a minute later Hornchurch drew level following a sensational goal from GEORGE PURCELL, who hammered the ball home in spectacular fashion.

Hornchurch were now dominant  - but not for long. Tambeson Eyong and Richard Halle went for a ball on the half way line, and Halle was left sprawling on the ground. The referee reached for a card, and it was red, a decision which did not go down well with the away following.

Hornchurch continued to press, and a long throw from Hayles ended with the ball bouncing off the bar and out for a corner, which Duncan floated over, and which Lumley caught in fine style.

Billericay came more into the match towards the end, and a long throw from Dave Collis caused a few anxious moments before Inigo punched the ball out for a corner. This proved to be the last move of the match, and Hornchurch may well feel that they should have taken all three of the points back to the Bridge.
