A Groundhopper’s View

New Ground 13 for this season - 925 overall.

South Mids Division One at Herns Way, WGC.

Welwyn Garden City (All claret/Sky blue trim) 2-2 Southall (White/Blue),

attendance 72.

Admission a fiver inc programme. Real Ale yes/no, yes, but I didn't partake tonight (diet), Youngs 'Gold' and Abbot Ale I think it was. Filled rolls one fifty each, good sized rolls, tasty ham salad.

Second time in a week I've seen Southall, and I must say they are a breath of fresh air. Mostly an ethnic eleven, quick, skillful, with great attitude and little swearing, unlike their hosts and their oafish bench. Last week I'd seen them turn over early league leaders Sun Postal. Tonight they were a little less impressive, but still very good.

0-1, 1-1. ht. 1-2, 2-2. All good well worked goals. Two good teams in this league who should challenge at the top.

Weak referee, programme said he was only 20, but had played for Spurs/Northampton, presumably as a Junior, and turned to refereeing.

One incident in the second half when a Southall player went down in the box when challenged. Home players thought he'd taken a dive, didn't look like that to me, and they ran over and stood over him in a threatening way, before other players became involved. This incident was incited by WGC, yet the ref ended up booking 2 from Southall and only 1 from WGC, an absolute joke. Ref finally after about the 20th incident of the F word from the bench directed at the officials, spoke to them, about 60 minutes to late IMHO.

Good luck to Southall FC, great little club.

Would agree on points on Southall. Very well disciplined and possibly the quietest bench in non-league football?

Nice to hear these things. After last year, when you could buy a small car with the amount of fines we received, there's been a real shift in discipline at the club. Plus the guys on the 1st team bench, trust their players and tactics wholeheartedly, so there's little need to shout at players on the pitch. All it does is distract them anyway. It's an old fashioned out dated model, that too many teams still do, most likely to over compensate for other shortcomings.
