17th Aug - Northwood (h)

Recommended Posts

Fraser was superb and just showed how ridiculous it was that he was ignored for the 2nd half of last season

with the lack of strikers thought set plays were best hope of scoring and yet not sure we properly attacked any cross. most had an off day and seemed to just be hoping someone else would do the business and put the ball in the back of the net rather than be the one busting a gut to get on the end of the crosses

bitterly disappointing to lose against at best an ok Northwood side. very annoying that they let us off the hook 2 or 3 times with glorious chances missed and yet we still conceded after failing a few times to clear the danger

lots of work to do but won't be worrying too much yet. must put it right in the next few games though

Great turn out fan wise today, real pitty result / performance wise, but if I am going to be honest, we never looked like winning that game today and not be critical for the sake of it but that was the poorest I've seen us play in a long time. Didn't realise how small of a side we have now and as my other half tells me (size doesn't or shouldn't matter, right ;). IMO we look no better than last season and like a bunch of individuals. I'm hurting like the rest of fellow rebels and maybe shouldn't be commenting but we look far from title contenders after that performance. Only entertaining part of today was standing in the shed whilst the pre match calor gas BBQ advertisement was being read over the tanoy by one of our own supporters ;)

Desperately disappointing result today against a very ordinary, distinctly average Northwood team.

Before the game began I thought Slough would easily have the measure of their opponents and we would be 3 points to the good come the end of the game. How wrong can you be.

It's not the end of our season losing the first game of the season but it was rather dejecting when for all Dave Woozley's efforts at encouragement, many players failed to stir themselves or to take the game to Northwood.Something seems amiss as you would have thought their first home game would have been enough encouragement to be up for it.

Admired the management's decision to put Adam Foulser up front but unfortunately the move didn't come off but I thought he should have stayed on the field in another position, rather than taking him off completely. He was needed.

I thought our centre midfield play was poor today.Too often they were isolated from the forwards.

Also thought we tried too many long balls rather than trying a simple pass.

Victor Osobu battled gamely up front but had little to feed off of.

Our wingers can provide good crosses but too often they put over, high balls. What's wrong with low across the floor crosses or running towards the goal?

Sad that our good crowd of 331 was so quiet and subdued, with so little goalmouth action or sense of urgency this was little surprise.

Not the start any of us wanted but plenty of room for improvement.

As the song goes 'Things can only get better' !!! Lol!

Was going to say I was disappointed with only one forward available and having to put Adam Foulser up front but thanks to Bakes for clearing that one up.

It was a disappointing result and performance but I think people are right in not slagging the team off after just one game.

The players and management will know themselves that it was not good enough and I'm sure they will be determined to put it right on Tuesday.

I think Warren Harris was a good choice for MOTM and can only assume he was taken off because he was feeling his injury?

Totally agree, on a positive note both wingers had good games in my opinion....

Plenty of balls into the box and just lacking that finish

I thought both wingers had a better 2nd half than the first but neither done enough to make the difference unfortunately.

Thought Victor Osobu and Jake Somerville were our best players.

Agree with you about Adam Foulser.

Must also agree that I'm a tad concerned about our midfield. Don't want to say too much because it's only our first game but lack of creativity is one of my concerns.

You're so right about creativity.I think the same.

Currently I think our side could play a 3-5-2 easily, given the personnel we have. Thus enabling a centre midfielder to play as a forward thinking link man ie Warren Harris or Ollie Burgess, etc.

At the moment our 4-4-2 shape isn't functioning well.

Its a bit early to be worrying I was surprised(as others were) at the almost total disconnect between players especially since team spirit and cohesive action has been stressed by the new management as excellent in the teams they put out We must remember though that the first four games last season ( none against top opposition) produced just 4 points Im sure after four games this season we will be doing better than 4/12.

i was so enthralled with the game today i spent most of my time looking for balls in the jungle that is behind the far end goal ( wasn't impressed with a certain person moaning that they had almost run out of balls not my fault surely) there are several problems with todays performance i'm sure all the team know that and i'm sure bakes and unders will sort it out. first game, long way to go not worried yet. looking forward to tuesday if only the fact that lost balls are not my problem.

Yes but we did beat Northwood 5-0 in our first home game last season and against a Northwood team that included better players than this current one!

However,one Swallow doesn't make a Summer.

After the first 8 games we will get a clearer picture of what stage Slough are at.I'm not panicking yet,Captain Mainwaring!!

Well as promised I have had the evening to think through the performance....

I have to say myself and Jon were massively disappointed, as we had no spark all over the pitch, players were just waiting for others to do something, and we did not have the desire to go and work harder than Northwood (something that we pride ourselves on).

Obviously not having Scott Eddie and Johnnie is a huge blow for us, and that showed, we decided on playing Foulser up top, as he would give us that aerial threat, and having done it a few times for us before, we knew he would go and put himself about, however it did just not happen for the two of them up top yesterday.

I thought both Warren and Sean were our best players on the day, as at least they wanted to have a go, and Ollie had a go first half, however on a booking we felt he was the right change to make.

We have to go to Uxbridge and try to get a result, and then hopefully after that Eddie should be fit, and we will also have Johnnie Dyer back.

It is highly frustrating for us, as some of these players we have worked with for 2 years now, and we know they have a lot more to their game, however we wont panic, but we will be demanding more from them...

In terms of their goal, there were a lot of calls for offside from all our players, as the lad who scored it was in front of Jake with Sean on the goal line, however I could not be sure.

Such a shame we could not put on a performance in front of such a good crowd.

On the positive side, this time last year Burnham had lost 1-0 (to Godalming) and went on to win the league, so it can be done.... (I am afraid that is the only positive thing I can think at present, however we will be raring to go again on Tuesday)

Fair, honest assessment Neil (which I'd expect anyway). So will Ed Smith not be available for selection on Tuesday? Good news that Johnny Dyer is available as I thought he was missing for the first two matches? Regarding yesterday I was surprised by the lack of energy as I was hoping for a real high tempo performance, but still looking forward to Tuesday when I'm sure we all hope to witness a much improved performance although the result is more important!

Really disappointing.................the guys that have been together for some time looked as if they were only introduced in the dressing room..........some even looked as though they didnt care and werent up for it.................maybe the big crowd made them freeze ! Tuesday must be better.....even a scratch Beaconsfield got a win at one of the so called title contenders. Oh I forgot.we are also a title contender !

The management had said  that they had a squad that would cope with injuries and absences.................. and this was the first game before other injuries and suspensions happen

Hope to see Ed Bmith back for Uxbridge game. Not seen much of Ben Edwards but would like to see him come into contention for a place in midfield.

Is Jamie McClurg carrying an injury,Neil? Seemed out of sorts in the last two games.

Not knocking him,as I rate him highly, just an observation.

Is Dominic Rhone fit enough to make the subs bench? As he would be useful player to come on late in the game,if needed, especially given his pace and height.
