Hertford Town vs Hatfield Town - Local Derby!

Recommended Posts

Took your advice. Ground looked great, pitch looked great, new kit looked great: but the defence didn't! Hatfield won't score 4 goals again all season.

We'll be better on Tuesday. Had a couple of key players missing and the ones that did play were complacent. Hopefully the awesome HTFC burgers will also make a welcome return as well! The ground did look good too didn't it and we had the biggest attendance of any SSML game yesterday by some margin. Fans were noisy but can do better. I'm pretty sure that those players that didn't perform yesterday will be getting a kick in the pants from The Un-Stable End blog tomorrow morning!

I went to the match yesterday and I have to say the committee of Hertford Town have to be commended for all the hard work they put in at the ground every pre-season. I've been going there for nearly a decade and the ground has changed so much, who remembers the terrible pitch & "brick wall"? The club is clearly on the rise... off the pitch.

On the pitch, what should have been a good start to 2013-14 turned out to be an embarrassment of epic proportions. Promising going forward, absolutely pathetic at the back. I felt for the new keep Harry Ricketts, how many times did Hatfield have one on ones with him? The Blues defence seemed to defend so high they were constantly undone with balls over the top. I agree with Horace, Hatfield took their chances and deserved to win but let's face it they weren't a threatening team, it was a game gifted to them on a silver platter.

Can some one tell me why Tommy Wade (the guy that dragged us safe of relegation last season with Mark Summers) was playing at centre half? He is clearly not a defender, and should never be asked to fill in as one ESPECIALLY at the start of the season. Does that mean there is a lack of defenders already? Have Hertford got a decent enough squad to be competing on any level this season? These are all questions I heard being batted around by our fans before and after the game. Also interestingly I heard Marvin in the bar afterwards saying about how if we had scored the chances early on it would have been a different game... maybe so, but the reality was that we lost because our defence was atrocious, if you dont let in goals you dont lose, simple. Where is the defensive coach we've been hearing about? He's clearly not doing his job very well!

BigDogCol - Stotfold on Tuesday night will be interesting as they got off to a winning start yesterday, not sure what their team will be like this season & if they've still got Robbo in goal. I take it our 'key' player Anstead will still be out for that? It seems insane  to go on holiday in the opening week of the season, why not do it in the close season?

Will Anstead be back for Saturday's FA Cup match? I'm not really looking forward to that match especially given that Colney Heath easily beat Hatfield Town.

I haven't been to the ground for a while, I got fed up watching the defensive football that was being played at Christmas time, with 21 players in the Hertford half. I thought that as the weather was nice and somebody told me that Hertford were one of the favourites to finish at the top of the league I would go along. What a shambles against a not very good Hatfield side. Every time the ball was passed through the middle of the Hertford defence Hatfield managed to finish up one on one with the keeper. I don't think Hertford could win an egg and spoon race at this rate.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the FA cup against what appears to be a strong Colney Heath side, I may go again, just for a laugh.

People at the club were never tipping ourselves for title. We will definitely do better than last season but you don't go from relegation battle to title winners in one year. We set ourselves target of top 8 finish this season and challenge for promotion the following season. Saturday was disappointing but I am still optimistic we will resolve one issue in defence and push on.

There is definitely a vibe around the club that this season will be better than the last two - a good core of young local talent has been built on and the support is fantastic. They definitely wont be title winners, that takes a decent budget/sugar daddy - something the club doesnt have if they are looking to invest money into the infrastructure.

At this level of the game it is easily possible to take a team that was languishing around the bottom one season up to the top. Just look at Hanwell Town, Oxhey & St Mags (not so much but are a "small" team) - In 2011/12 Hanwell finished 20th out of 22, Oxhey 16th, St Mags 12th - then went on to finish 6th, 3rd, and 4th respectively last season. It also goes the other way... I remember Harefield losing out on league title in 2008-09 by one goal difference two seasons later they were languishing around the bottom. Peaks and troughs.

LoucasX - was that one issue in defence playing Tommy Wade out of position?

@transitionperiod - Confirmed, Anstead & Donovan still absent but back for Saturday's FA Cup game. Not sure if Stock or Corbett will be fit for tonight but should be ok for Saturday. Been talking to Anstead whilst he's been away and he can't wait to get back and in amongst the goals, bookings, etc!
