16th July - Holyport (a)

Good all round performance.

Over the two games the 21 goals have been spread throughout the side which is the sign of a good TEAM.

The team have a good work ethic and if they should lose the ball always work hard to get it back.

The passing is good and even when they are coasting they still have the desire to score more goals.

Also at this stage of pre season I have never seen a FITTER Rebels team.

With the fixtures out tomorrow I cannot wait for the season to start.

Have to agree, the work-rate and desire to put teams to the sword even in friendly games, is quite remarkable.

Some of the misgivings allayed last night but too soon to write panegyrics as much tougher tests await.......much quality on display and the commitment and pace shown by the (almost) two sides put out last evening were terrific to see.Darren Wheeler was clearly man of the first half with Guy Hollis and Ollie Burgess probably sharing that honour second half...........also would comment on an assured performance by Ashleigh James at left back in that second period.

Defensive pairing of Woozley and Foulser looks impressive(though we should have

kept Alex !) and it was good to talk to Dominic Rhone about his progress---he said he would even have liked 15 minutes in this game-- as I am sure his style of play will suit the Baker/Underwood model.

Cant make Thursday at Binfield but will look forward to the news/score/result on here

Don’t usually pay too much attention to pre-season but 21 unanswered goals in two games is pretty impressive! We only managed a 4-0 and a 1-0 at Holyport last two seasons.

Where has Ollie been lining up for us? Glad he’s doing well, I think he’s a good player but I was never sure we really found his best position last season.

Another impressive performance from the squad with some really nicely worked goals.

Had a good look at Adam Foulser and Guy Hollis and have to say they look two mightily impressive athletes.

Could mention most of the players having good games tonight but Darren Wheeler and the two Harris brothers will be big players for us this season.

Early days but it's looking good.

COYR!!

I agree with you on Adam Foulser and Guy Hollis. In fact I thought all our defenders were excellent. Wes Harrison played very well in the first 30 minutes as Dan Read, who played wide, didn't help him much [he is a striker after all].

Ryan Lake is a bigger bloke than I thought he would be and also looked a decent defender.Wouldn't say he is as good as Danny Murphy going forward but looks a better defender.Definitely harder to beat.

What is noticeable about our backline is the size and strength of the players. This certainly bodes well for the league games.

An observation though,I thought Dave Woozley and Adam Foulser need to address who is giving the instructions of play.Wooz was doing a lot of it but in that way he is undermining the captain's calls.Think Bakes and Unders need to think this through.

Thought Adam Foulser was MOM last night. He looks a class act. He wouldn't be a central defender in my team ! ha ha!

I think James McClurg will become a favourite of mine.He covers a lot of ground and isn't afraid to tackle but looks like he can set up attacks as well. Thought Adam Logie made the right passes without being spectacular.Think he didn't quite know where to position himself in the midfield , to fit with his new teammates.

Ollie Burgess looked settled in and scored a peach of a goal. Ollie's a good footballer but he's always been better getting forward than doing the donkey work in midfield. It could be that he will fit in better when playing in this style of up tempo play. However, not every game are you on the front foot.

Ed Smith,Johnny Dyer and Darren Wheeler all caught the eye but for once have to disagree with you,RR, about the Harris brothers.I'm yet to be convinced but early days.Thought Scott Harris missed a hatful of chances last night.I get confused which one is which,at times!

How many times have we seen players in pre-season or even,in their first full season be garbage only to come back and be brilliant the next or full season.

Always think of Darren Anderson as a case in point. Remember him joining Slough in the Conference, coming to us with much hyped professional league experience, only to be a donkey in his first full season and yet the next season,he was a revelation and proved what class defender he was and became our skipper.

Pre-season games are especially hard to judge.

21 goals in 2 games is good by anyone's standard, though and Holyport is usually a tougher test than last night's affair,so you have to be pleased.

I actually think thought it was good the way both Foulser and Wooz communicated with the other players and between themselves and it worked well. Apart from Wooz over the last few seasons I think we've been pretty quiet at the back.

Be interesting to see what happens on the left side. Obviously Wheeler is signed but both Lake and Blake look to be two very talented players with a good footballing background.

Wonder if the thought could be to sign them all with the possibility of Blake playing ahead of Lake, with Wheeler on the right on occasions?

It's certainly going to be a (good) headache for Neil and Jon over the next week or two when some difficult decisions need to be made. I think the team v Northwood will be:

Somerville

Lake

Foulser

Hollis

Harrison

Wheeler

Short

McClurg

W. Harris

Smith

Dyer

Subs:

S. Harris

Burgess

Fraser

Read

Woozley

Chris,I'm not saying that it's not good to have leaders on the field of play but from where I stood [in the first half] both where treading on each others toes, metaphorically speaking.Obviously both need to build a rapport with each other and their team mates. One's got to have the authority over the other.I thought it was a natural status battle.

This happened when Wooz played separately with Perkins and Bowden Haase.Perkins took no notice and let Wooz lead[though he wasn't leading him!].Bowden Haase wasn't such a pushover! Alex Brown and Wooz got it right last season both used different tact but didn't cross over their talk.

My opinion is Adam Foulser is the captain and should lead on the field of play but Dave Woozley is the coach and senior to Foulser, who should offer words of encouragement on the field of play but let the captain lead. The coaching should be done on the training ground.

Have to disagree on the Harris brothers. Warren Harris looks to attack down the right with pace and like Darren Wheeler will be a real handful for defenders. Scott Harris looks a strong player with plenty of experience. He has missed a couple but he's also stuck a couple of good ones away and seems to get himself into the right positions to score.

Ollie Burgess has done well so far in pre-season. He is a very skilful player and what I would call a luxury player. I found him a bit frustrating last season because one game he would be outstanding and the next he would disappear. Also came up a bit short when it came to a battle in midfield which is not really his game.

Wooz has done what we know he can do but for me I cannot see him dis-lodging Guy Hollis and Adam Foulser as the centre back partnership. But what a player to have as back-up!

To be honest it is more about getting used to what each other does, and same with Guy, Wooze is a natural leader in the way he plays and his natural talking, Foulser leads by the way he plays, not as a general organiser, and Guy just goes about his job quietly whilst having the utmost respect from everyone around him.

Give them more and more games together and that side of things will come.

Hope you are right about the Harris brothers[Ed and Keith or is it Rolf? ha ha].

You're spot on about Ollie Burgess. My thoughts exactly.

Don't think Dave Woozley will be happy if he doesn't play. I would play Reg Hollis[i mean Guy!] at right back to start season. With Adam Foulser and Dave Wooz in middle and Ryan Lake on left.Change about for different games.

So if we lost then last night you would have said it doesn't matter it is only a friendly and results don't matter  ;)

Holyport were not that poor to be honest, and I am sure will hold their own in the Hellenic Premier, however I just felt that we were stronger than them all over the park, and as people have said the lads worked Holyport into making mistakes, therefore giving us opportunities to score.

Binfield will be a lot tougher as they have signed some decent players this year, and for me will be one of the favourites for the league, then after that we go into a run of games against some very good sides.

We are not worried about the score's at the moment, however I mentioned it last night to the players, we do want to get a winning mentality going, and that starts pre season.

Some very good performances from people last night, and we hope that will continue into Thursday.

Looking forward to Thursday night to see the boys continue their good form. Holyport has never been an easy place for us to visit in recent years so to come away with that scoreline is great, but so is h earring about the work rate and desire of the squad for a "nothing" game. Great start to the season and have been impressed with everything Neil and Jon have done, and said, so far.

Well put Gaz!

Except must disagree about a 'nothing' game. All pre-season games are important in the build up to the season.

Don't forget Wooz is now player/coach so maybe willing to make way for the younger players.
