Tring Athletic - Biggest signing of the summer?

Recommended Posts

We signed on a different type of dotted line today but a much bigger deal than any player. In basic terms it means all the sports clubs (Football, Rugby, Squash, Bowls & youth football) grouped together to buy the freehold of the estate on which we are all based. A lot of work has gone into this over the last couple of years so glad to have got there in the end.

From www.tafc.co.uk

Little over 10 years ago Tring Athletic Football Club were declined floodlights at their Council owned Miswell Lane ground but this set back spurred them onto greater things. A move to Cow Lane, former home of Tring Town, the first step was the building of new Club House which opened in 2003 following expenditure of c£275,000. The Sports Clubs at Pendley all benefitted from a legacy left by Dorian Williams which provided them with sports grounds, free of rent for 65 years expiring in 2043. Under the leadership of Chairman, Chris Langford, Pendley Sports Centre and the various Clubs have negotiated the purchase of the Freehold title thereby securing the future of all the Clubs based in Cow Lane. So in Athletic’s case they have moved from owning very little to being the proud owners of a first class Football Stadium, Training pitch and one of the smartest and best equipped Club houses in the area used for football related activities, birthday celebrations, charity functions and corporate events. Success on the field has not been lacking and everyone connected with the Club over this period should be very proud of what has been achieved and has been put in place for future generations to enjoy.

The title of this topic is very mis-leading. Thought Tring had finally got sam Jolliffe on a contract before one of the big spenders come in to sign him. On the whole though, some quite good news.

Nothing concrete yet on the Joliffe deal. Sam has asked for Cheese & Onion crisps but we've only got Ready Salted in stock at the moment.

Do you now fully own the ground or have you agreed a mortgage and begun paying it?

I know what we've done to raise the funds but won't disclose methods or figures etc on here. What I will say (and can be found in the public domain for a small fee!) is that there is no legal charge or mortgage against the football club, training ground or indeed any of our homes as I've seen at other clubs in the past. You'd do very well to find a lender to grant finance against a football club especially at our level in the current climate.

One thing that did baffle us was that the FA or Football Foundation won't provide any funding to be able to buy you own ground or land. I would have thought that would be a better use of central funding as opposed to say building dug outs or a path around a pitch.

Rebadiah - What relation are you to Sam Jolliffe?

So you now own the ground, and there is no remaining fee to pay?

Give it a few seasons and you'll be promoted if so!

Personally I think there are 1 or 2 more projects that should be done before we start throwing cash at players. Hopefully now the ground is owned the next one can be pushed forward in the next 12 - 18 months. The majority of our club officials, players across the 4 teams and management are (hopefully) in it for the long term and what we aim to do continues to be in the interest of the club, town and wider local community rather than just 1 football team.

Obviously the first team is main focus but we want to have both a sustainable business model to maintain and progress a club that can survive and move forward on and off the field. A number of young players particularly last season have come through from the reserves and West Herts teams into the first team which hopefully will serve well for the future.

We've seen a number of local sides struggling financially including the old Berko Town, Tring Town and last season Leighton Town & don't want to join that club !

Fantastic news for all involved ... Lovely club and people. .

Does this deal mean Tring will be able to dual register Stewart King with the Tring Tornado's running club?
