Westfield Reserves

Recommended Posts

Towards the end of last season the Suburban League made an approach for everyone of our Reserve teams with floodlights.  They were not interested in the remaining clubs who do not have lights and are thus not wanted by them and the approach merely followed a pattern which has reduced the Reserve Division over several seasons to the point where it is almost impossible to carry on.

We had hoped that with one or two additions, we would still be able to run a reserve section in the forthcoming season simply for those teams who wanted to stay but the additions have not materialised and Westfield's resignation, after the AGM, is effectively the final straw as it leaves just seven clubs in the Reserve Section.

We have advised the seven that are left that we no longer regard the Reserve Section as sustainable for next season and are doing our best to find another league for them to play in.

For season 2014-2015, it is the League's intention to set up an U21 division if there is enough interest, with an agreed number of overage players being allowed to play in it.

Sad news, but one has to wonder in these days of financial constraint, if actually running a reserve side is viable.

Any proposal to make reserve teams mandatory would have to be voted in by the clubs and it seems unlikely that they would give ascent given that the majority either wish to play their reserve team football elsewhere or they don't have a reserve team in the first place.

I believe the drift set in several years ago when some clubs went to the Suburban League because it meant playing against the reserve sides of more senior clubs and at bigger stadiums.  That is not really the case these days as in the lower divisions of the Suburban League there is a concentration of Step 5 clubs in the main but the trend has continued.

I don't think from the League's point of view that we are over concerned about reserve team football except that  in recent years we have always tried to provide it for those clubs that wanted it.  Sadly that seems no longer possible.  We are more concerned about keeping the numbers up in Division One but at the AGM the clubs rejected the idea of a maximum of two reserve teams coming in from higher levels, even though the rules would have been altered to prevent such sides influencing promotion.  We really need more clubs in our catchment area to bite the bullet and get the facilities to step up to Step 6 but it is easier said than done and we seem to have almost exhausted the possibilities.  Expansion at Ryman and Southern League levels doesn't help, of course.

Clubs bite the bullet? Not over concerned about Reserve Team Football? A great advertisement for the CCL League Management Committee.Yet you want to set up an U21 League, why bother?Maybe a new Website would be a start!!!!!!!

Thanks Alan. Sums it up beautifully.

To be quite honest, unless CCL clubs are fortunate enough to have a rich sugar-daddy, OR, have reserve squad members that are willing to fund their existance, reserve sides are really an expensive non-starter.

Are they?

Clubs can seem to find a few hundred quid each week for players so a reserve side should be a problem.

Running a side in the CCL reserve league isn't a huge expense. Of course you can save money but I think the benefit of having a side to bring through young players and those on the fringes can't be beaten

Big JR in recent years I remember Merstham, Chipstead and Godalming all going up whilst funding a reserve side. Most of their players that got them promoted had come through their youth / reserve set ups.

2011/12 I ran Mole Valley SCR's Suburban league side with Eric. Last year a number of those players were part of the team that helped get the firsts back up.

When we were at Cove doing the reserves there was one game where the first team manager had all sorts of problems with suspensions and injuries so took 7 players from the ressies in 1 go. They won the game and a number of those players stayed in the first team which is what it's all about.

If a reserve side is run properly and is fully integrated into the club it is a huge benefit.

Alrite Smudge, I come to that figure based on costs to enter league, referees, linos, floodlights, food after games etc. These figures are a year and a half old though!

Does the pitch come free then? Not all clubs own their own ground.

No that was based on a club having its own ground mate which alot of clubs are fortunate enough to have.

If a club is ground sharing then obviously costs will go up depending on how much the host club charges :)
