Tuohy: I would’ve been silly to quit Hornchurch

Hornchurch striker Martin Tuohy admitted it would have been silly if he had left a place where he is feeling settled after signing on for a third season with Urchins this week.

Tuohy netted 17 goals for Jimmy McFarlane’s men in the Conference South last season, but it was not enough for the Bridge Avenue side to avoid the drop back into the Ryman League.

But after a couple of weeks of mulling over what to do next, former Ryman golden boot winner Tuohy admitted his mind was made up, despite reported interest from Premier Division rivals Canvey Island.

He said: “Jimmy spoke to me a couple of weeks ago and he said he wanted me back and it’s nice to be wanted.

“I said I would give it a little bit of time before rushing into anything. And though there was interest from elsewhere, I am settled here.

“I spoke to other clubs, but when I weighed it all up the obvious choice was Hornchurch. I’ve spent two seasons here and been very happy and it would have been silly if I didn’t stay where I am happy.

“It’s a brilliant club and the supporters are great. It was in a lot of debt a few years ago, but everyone has worked hard to make it debt free. The way the club works behind the scenes is fantastic.”

And now the forward has signed on the dotted line he is hopeful others will follow to give the club the best chance of bouncing straight back up to the Conference South at the first attempt.

“We will have a great chance of going straight back up if we can keep the majority of last season’s squad and add one or two in,” added Tuohy.

“We’ve lost Alex Bentley to Bromley, which is a blow but understandable, and also Kieron St Aimie to Chelmsford, but if most of us can stay together then I see no reason why we can’t be successful this season.”

Tuohy knows exactly what it takes to challenge at the top of the Ryman Premier, having done so with both the Urchins and Aveley under former boss Rod Stringer.

And he revealed his initial goal scoring target will be 20 as he aims to spearhead the Hornchurch front line once again.

“I scored 31 goals in this division before so I know what it is all about,” he added.

“You always set yourself a target of 20 as a striker and the main aim is to get us back up to the Conference South.”

Hornchurch will field a second string in the Essex Senior League’s expanded reserve division next season.

They will face local rivals Romford and 16 other teams home and away over the course of the campaign.

n Hornchurch are running a 24-hour darts marathon next Friday (June 28) to raise funds for the teenage cancer trust, after their recent link up with the charity.

Various darts games will be played throughout the day, as play starts at 3pm, while they will also count down the score from 25,001.

The bar will also be open for anyone who wants to come along and support the event and the entry fee is in the form of a minimum £1 donation to the charity.
