Who's the bigger club?

Recommended Posts

Kettering are charging £216 for a season ticket and £180 concessions. Absolute robbery at this level of football.

They obviously still think they are a Conference club.

Paying for new players' wages, no doubt! ;)

For gawds sake, DD has left our club and we still go on about him in this and other threads.....

I don't get it, it's not exactly like he was our (or a) superstar player. I mean, if talking a good game on Twitter or words to that effect counted, he'd have most definitely contributed to us not being in this league.....

Anyways, my main reason for this post.....it is sad to see one of the fallen giants of none league football Kettering playing at this level too.

I am now 35, but growing up watching us in the Vauxhall Opel playing against the likes of Yeovil Town (who's results I have followed since the mid 80s because if any team deserved to play as high as possible, it is them because of their fan base), so it is a shame to see how far Kettering have fallen.

In none league terms, 'bigger' clubs surely have to be with regards to their following and history in league status.

Much like how we are the big club in the Central league, when compared to other teams.

So I'd say on 'fan' base and 'history' you'd have to say Kettering surely (if we were to take our biased hats of here).

For example, when we got to the Conference first time around, Kettering were one of the big name teams that stood out when looking at the fixtures. Well supported and well known in the top league of none league football. I genuinely think it is a shame how theyve fallen, can you believe two ex conference clubs playing in the central league next season.

This is only my opinion, but going back to Conference days, Kettering were like the Man U of the Conference and I was estactic when we got a 0-0 draw away to them on a cold Tuesday night. Youd have thought we'd won the league to draw there. They were (for me) the big boys when we played them. Saying that, I also remember beating them 3-0 at WP on the first game of a season, which was a big result for us.

Yes, things are different now, Yeovil Town who were in the same league as us in late 80s, now in second tier of English football, whilst were playing in the same league as Kettering Town, who were once a regular team in the top tier of none league pyramid, in the lower tier of none league football (below bloody Burnham)...

Realistically, would someone like DD have got a sniff at Kettering back in the conference days? Think we all know the answer.

I love Slough Town FC, dont get me wrong, but lets be honest, those of you who remember watching us in the 80s before we got promoted, to say we were bigger than Kettering would have been laughable.

I think we have believed our own hype with how big we are in this (Central) league, which is why other teams want to be us so much, but now Kettering are in our league, we may have to face facts that we are not the biggest team in the league (maybe a good thing right)?

All I am saying, is that in terms of none league football, Slough Town are a big club, but lets be realistic when comparing ourselves to 'certain' other clubs with richer history in the pyramid.

No what you mean is that they are in a better position than us AT THE MOMENT !

Where were they in the 60's/70's when we were getting 4000 for an evening fixture against Dagenham and regular 2-4000 against Maidenhead in the Xmas/New year derbys ?

Kettering have now fallen as far as us-but they are a bigger club than Hornchurch.Really you can only judge a club's size on what its done in the past and also its potential crowds wise.I have always maintained that if we climbed the leagues again the support would increase-I always quote Stevenage F.C. who hardly had any supporters of note, and were way below Slough's level, but the council got behind them and the rest is history.

I think we need to be realistic that we are not bigger at the moment and are in the position we are and that's that.

History is just one measure. At the moment hornchurch are above us and have a bigger potential going forward until we have our own ground and that's what makes arbour vale so important

Mark44,

When people talk about who is the bigger club they take everything into account but mainly history and size of support.

Hornchurch only have one thing to beat us and that's their current position in the pyramid.

For what it's worth, I agree with Mark44 on this one.

If history is the only factor, Liverpool would be bigger than (or at least competing with) the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester United, but we all know that isn't how it works!
