Barnet Articles

Recommended Posts

I've been asked by the Enfield Town Fanzine to write an article for their first issue, and being a lazy sod I have decided to do something easy on a particular favorite of mine and I am sure of yours too. I'll write about Barnet.

But then I thought, wouldn't it be better if lots of us were to write our experiences/encounters of Barnet FC over the years? With this in mind I am asking can I have you post  up some funny or tragic experiences of the boys formerly of Underhill. The funniest will be printed in the magazine. Hell - they'll all be printed in the new magazine!

Obviously your rivalry with Barnet has been somewhat dormant for years,at least on the pitch but my friend is a Barnet fan and assures me he still hates Enfield with a passion.

although Hornchurch and Romford have only ever played each other 3 times in competitive matches in recent years,I will always hate them due to the bitterness that exists from some fans of both sides.

Do you think that the rivalry will re ignite as you are getting closer to them and would an FA Cup/Trophy tie against them be just what your club needs in terms of recruiting new/old fans???

Old habits die hard but that lot are not that important to our history.

Ok

I have many memories of Barnet.

Ray Hill having his leg broken in a league game.

Playing a London Senior Cup final at Underhill against St Albans which was gate crashed by QPR supporters who felt that it would be fun to throw glass at the roof of the stand so that we would be showered with broken glass.

But the best one was at the 7 goal thrashing in the FA cup with my parents and Ashford was playing for us. Ashford collected the ball on the halfway line and seemed to lazily go through the Barnet defence who were mesmerised. My mum was shouting "Ash Ash get rid of it, get rid of it". Feeling he would give the ball away or lose it setting up a Barnet attack but she had to add at the end of her screaming, "Oh he's scored." Brilliant.

What set off the rivalry was the tremendous crowds that used to go to the games. In the sixties there could be 2-3000 at the games.

Many memories of Barnet, but the one that springs to mind is not a game, but of pre-match entertainment before a game. My cousin and I decided it would be a great idea to throw a lot of blue and white confetti around pre match before a particular fixture, and had departed the scene leaving a load of blue & white paper fluttering on the home terrace. A couple of youngsters were passing by the scene and got accused of throwing it all around and told in no uncertain terms that if they did not do so they would get "duffed up".

So I would just like to say to those two young lads who spent ten minutes picking it all up 'SORRY!!!'
