Back in 2007 a national newspaper suggested the names of eleven of the best English prospects in the game at that time who would go on to be part of our squad for the 2014 World Cup, these included the likes of Gavin Hoyte, Sam Hutchinson, Robbie Threlfall, Dean Parrett and Jose Baxter but only Theo Walcott and Micah Richards of the eleven went on to play for England:

I think the people at the top know what they are doing.  Why else would they be trumpeting all the time about how much they're doing for grassroots football.  The FA seems to be powerless or, more likely, the high post holders don't want to rock the boat which gives them prestige and wealth.  Top clubs are nearly all businesses that don't want to do anything that will reduce their money making abilities.  Millionaire players have scaled the greasy pole and most just concentrate on hanging on. They all throw coins out of their gilded coaches to the cheering masses as they travel between palace and palace.  We should be grateful for that.

I remember seeing the article (was it the Mirror?) looking at the England youth team that Andros Townsend emerged from. A lot of these hot prospects were either already at or got swallowed up by one of the big 6 or 7 clubs and never ended up doing anything with their career.

Either they would have been stuck behind all the big money signings or just get big contract and not care. It seems to be more acceptable to have a £23m flop who can't speak English rather than clubs taking a chance on the kids except in the league cup.

Yes, we would walk miles if need be to places like Hackney Marshes, Wanstead Flats and Wormwood Scrubbs for a game of football on a Sunday but now kids can't be bothered to get out of bed or off their x-boxes can they
