New Players

Recommended Posts

Bit off topic but just see David Deeney slagging off the Slough players that are staying there this season. What a nice bloke! I know exactly what I'd do if I was one of them players and happen to come up against him in the season ahead! Thomo would have thrived off playing players like him!

Bakes (I still prefer Neil !)...........thanks for the personal reply....as others have said this is much appreciated.

You ask what we would have asked of Steve Bateman had he stayed.......answer is simple and is the same as we want from you..........to get out of this ******** league

And he did tell me at our awards night that he was looking t o bring in two or three new players which was what I would have expected..........to be fair, it was also apparent that there were one or two(he didnt of course mention names!) that clearly would not have been part of this season's plans.

I am sure you realise that all comments are from the heart (some of us go back over 30 years as supporters) and any concern is real and not a kind of misplaced loyalty to the past-------though we do cherish much of the past anyway !

The support will be unwavering and when it comes to next year end of season awards lets hope the league trophy is centre stage

Sounds like Dave Deeney's got a big mouth and a small brain.

It is strange how different people see the game.

I remember numerous conversations towards the end of the season where myself and the guys I stand with/sit with on the coach were discussing how wholesale changes are needed.

In fact we came up with a list of players we would keep and only came up with 7 players who we would keep and rebuild the squad around them. Out of those 7 players 4 of them are currently in the squad training with us. The other 3 decided to move on despite interest from our new management to keep them (Martin, Parsons and Warro)

I therefore think that the wholesale changes were needed. I agree with Neil in the respect that Godalming were probably a better team than us last season, how many clubs did we visit who said they were the best side they saw all season?

Therefore I really believe that the guys coming in alongside the ones we have kept will do better than last year. The one thing that is apparent is the work ethic will be there, no longer will we have to watch a team who are good when it comes to the big boys but cannot motivate themselves against lower mid table sides.

Ha ha Neil is absolutely fine....

No problems at all, we know it is quite a lot to take in etc, but we are both really passionate, focused and ambitious, and we would love nothing more than to be able to provide step 3 football next season.

As I said we are under no illusions that it will be tough, as there are some decent sides in the league this year, and think it will be stronger than last year.

OH blimey Graham, this is getting serious we are both totally singing from the same hymn sheet.

I hope no one takes what I say as being against them but we have known some of the players for a long time and its not easy seeing them leave, some of course its good to see the back of !

Also much prefer Neil and Jon so much nicer,

From my own perspective,I don't believe any club should be allowed to take more than 10 players from a single other club in one season,as it strikes me as unfair and against the ethical spirit of the non-league game as a whole.

However, there is no such rule currently in operation and so Neil and Jon can bring as many Godalming players to Slough as they like.Slough needed change, and I can empathise totally with our new joint managers with the logic they are applying to the squad situation.

It's obvious that the fans are going to have to acclimatise to all these new faces and that the heart of the team feels like it's been ripped out from the fans point of view but what's better, another underachieving season under Steve Bateman or a whole fresh approach from new incumbents in the job.

I know which one I favour and that is the latter option.

We all have our favourite Slough players and in an my ideal world,I would have tried to keep Adam Logie,James Hawtree,Wooz,Ed,Swifty,Kyle,Jake,Alex and Sean this coming season[that's personal preference] and look to have a squad of 20 but let two-three go out on loan.Especially now we no longer have a reserve team but none of us can have our own utopia.

Neil and Jon will live and die[in football terms!]by their results on the field and we,supporters are sure to be entertained,whatever....... Come On You,Rebels!

I think under normal circumstances it would normally never be 10,11, 12, 13 players that follow a manager but Godalmings situation with their move to the South and West division, with the extra travelling, meant some players couldn't mix the extra travelling with their day jobs.

Also, they seem a very close knit group of players on and off the pitch and things snow-balled when some players said they couldn't do the travelling.

Over the 3 and a bit years under SB we all had our favourite players but league performances were dropping and it was obvious that a radical change was needed.

This is a new and exciting era under Bakes and Unders and one that we should all be really looking forward to.

It was always going to happen that there would be a major change over of players, as the mix Bateman put together on paper was league winning but never consistently gelled to produce the winning runs required to get the top spot.

I do agree that there are / were a number of players who should be retained as their loyalty and skills are what the fans want to see.

Alex Browne to me is a good example of the type of player any manager would want as he has the skills, the passion and the thought process to win you games.

The other name that I would throw in the hat is Sean Sonner, one of the most passionate and determined players we have had in the last few years, willing to work all over the pitch and this was recognised by the fans and is why he was a favourite.

On the other hand there are the likes of the prostitute Deany who made it clear he was only there for the money and hyped himself up and failed to deliver.

At the end of the day it is up to the managers to put together the right 11 on the pitch to ensure at the end of the season that either promotion or a chance of promotion (play offs) is achieved as anything less than this is a failure.

Looking forward to this season and seeing if the results will come to get us out of this level and then justifying why Slough Town should be playing in the heart of the town.

Whilst you could not doubt Sonner's work ethic, if often led to him being out of position and I'd question his scoring rate/finishing, particularly in comparison to the two strikers which formed a partnership which ultimately led to him leaving, and also his discipline.

Sonner - 45/144 = 0.31 goals per game

Burnell - 80/138 = 0.58 goals per game

Smith - 33/45 = 0.73 goals per game
