New Players

Recommended Posts

Yes its good that  Alex is training but I think it would be wrong to assume that he is likely to be an automatic choice for 1st team  I think its likely we will lose a few from last year  who believe first team football is a given and wont want to be warming the bench  the same could be true of some of the Godalming  imports So far Ive been very impressed with the way the new management have gone about their business and I believe early results will dispel any doubts

Seems the 4 new players who turned up for training have come from this level and above.

It would be interesting to know who the players are and what teams they have been playing for.

Would not be fair to talk about trial it's that have come from other clubs until anything has been agreed, or until they are playing in the games.

Another cracking session tonight, some great decisions for us to make later on in pre season....

Barry your right managers dont have to justify their decisions but if they are happy to come on to an open forum and answer questions, then I am sure they will know that some people will ask questions that they would prefer not to answer publicly, saying that you cant blame the person for asking. I did notice in a previous post someone asked a question and Jon or Neil answered very politely that that was a question for the fans forum, on the 11th.

Eddie I would hope that every managers aim is to get promotion or whatever is best for their team.

I dont know, but I think Hammer Rebel is another one like me who did'nt think our team was that bad and was just hoping that as we have heard all the Godalming signings (before training) would like to hear of some Slough ones apart from Ed (who I like as well) nothing wrong with that really.

As I have said before we all have our favourites and whatever happens will be behind the new team 100%

I agree that it will be tough for Swifty although hope he battles through and even if he isn't in the squad to begin with keeps contact with our new management for a return later in the season.

I would love to see the rest mentioned above in the squad. One player who I think could be much better under our new management is Ollie Burgess, it was so often that under the Bateman era we stuck players out of position just to fit them in, Ollie was one of these who got stuck out on the wing and went missing at times because of it (mainly because he always had to cut inside etc etc). When in the middle he is a very skillful player and adds value to the team but rarely got a chance there due to accomodating Deeney etc.

Really looking forward to Pre season and the strategy is fantastic with regards to 45 mins then 90 mins then cut squad so that we can have 2 weeks with our first team playing and hit the floor running when the season starts.

Agreeing again with Sue(getting to be a habit) and of course Marcus as initially it aint gonna be like watching our beloved Slough.....I said in a previous post that we were one point off the playoffs and with a momentum that may have got us through those with a team most of us were lauding.  Equally I remember discussions on leaving Wey Court last season that we were better than Godalming that evening and that only a couple of their players would get into our side.

So while I trust Steve Easterbrook's judgment in his appointment of the new management team , and therefore want to trust equally their judgment, I certainly have concerns at the wholesale import of Godalming players, apparently nailed on for the team, whereas last years good servants are told they have to fight for a place.

Clearly we all support the team passionately, and will want to back the new management, but I do caution against the high optimism that seems to be in some of our friends, purely on the basis of the incoming(and non local)men

Graham, I would agree that on the night we did not play that great against Slough, but I wouldn't read too much into that, as I can count on one hand how many times we did not deserve anything from a game last year...

In terms of the non local bit, most are within 15 miles of Slough, I think of the players coming in, only 2 will travel further to play for Slough than Godalming, so plenty of local players, in fact more so than last year when you had players travelling from the likes of Milton Keynes etc.

Also with regards to players nailed on to play, then nobody is in that boat....

My question to you would be if Steve B had stayed, what would you have been wanting from him, as from our point of view as a manager, we got really close, and with a little but more depth to the squad (we ran with 16 all season) and a 30 goal striker we believe we would have won it.

Now would you make wholesale changes to a team that got so close??? or would you make tweaks to the squad and improve where you could???

People will have to forget where people played last year, it is all about where they play this year, every player has normally played somewhere else before anyway, the players that we have next year irrespective of if they were Godalming Slough or somewhere else last season, will be fighting for the amber shirt, and will all have the same end goal.

I guess you have to trust us that we will pick the strongest squad we can, whoever that may be, everyone has favourites etc in life, however we do not pick on sentiment, but on what we believe is right for us and the team.

Funnily enough after taking the job I had a really good conversation with Bates, and he was going to make a lot of changes this season also.

Remember we also have in Wooze someone who knows what we have coming in, and what was at Slough last year, and he has had some valuable input already.

Anyway it is all change no doubt, but as I have said before any team that we put out, will be hard working and hopefully entertaining.

Will we win the league?? who knows as there will be some very good sides in the league next year, however we will give it a real good go.
