Not being too judgemental, should the son have been making more of an effort to support his mother. Unless he's incapacitated in some way then he should have been contacting social services about her plight rather than waiting until she's passed away before complaining about it. If he did, then there's clearly a breakdown in communication that the relevant council need to look at.

In general terms, we do need to make sure that people are not cheating the benefits system but I think there's too much emphasis on concentrating on the most vulnerable in society and not enough of the companies that are going to great lengths to avoid paying tax (Starbucks for example).

As if the lefties never abuse those who are more right wing?

The case of Stephanie Bottrill is indeed a very sad one, and my thoughts are with her family and friends.

It is unfortunate that because a number of people have abused our gracious benefits system over the years, that now money has to be clawed back and those who desperately need it are finding themselves in trouble.

Instead of blaming one side or the other, blame the complete pond-life who have taken benefits they were never meant to have and never given back.   An interesting comment from a girl in Gloucester today - she's 14, got 4 kids already and wants a bigger house and more money 'because I'm entitled to it.'

Where did you read about a 14 year old girl with 4 kids Adam. I did a little search on the net and I'm unable to find any reference to it. Its very difficult to believe that a 14 year old mother has already been given a house by your council, unless of coarse this is just another right wing fantasy to stir up more hatred against vulnerable people.

Alan, it wasn't online.

She was in Wetherspoon's in Gloucester (The Regal) at lunch time, and was openly bragging about it with four push chairs blocking the aisle.

As for 14 year olds getting houses, well one girl in my year at school got one when she was 15 and pregnant.  She even admitted getting pregnant to get a house and go on the social.

It must have been an unusual sight watching a 14 year old mum trying to push 4 pushchairs at the same time. Its also illegal for a 14 year old to live in a property unsupervised by a parent or guardian, or for them to be given state benefits.

I cant help feeling that someone is telling porky pies.

obviously i sympathise with Stephanie Bottrill's family but heres the facts:

for years taxpayers paid her rent, council tax and everything else

she was a single woman living in a three bedroom house

she was offered a very nice rent free bunaglow just 6 miles away

she killed herself in the most selfish manner

now i like most working people dont have 'spare' bedrooms thats probably  because ive always had to pay for my accomodation.when working people lose their jobs they arent helped in the sameway as 'professional' benefit claimants are.the real poor in this country arent on benefits they are the genuine 'working' class people.

Stephanie Bottrill was suffering from myasthenia gravis and was unable to work, and thats why she was dependant on benefits.

No point in letting the truth get in the way of a bit of benefit claimant bashing though is it, and of coarse all the people doing so would never dream of being a drain on hardworking taxpayers if they fell ill, or on hard times.

If you're cheating the system and in doing so taking away money from people that need it more, then that needs to be stopped.

But there does seem to be the attitude from the right wing papers that real poverty doesn't exist in this country and that everyone claiming benefit is lazy and just wants to live off the state. That just isn't true.

There isn't much of a safety net if you lose your job and have to make your way in life without that security, I understand that. I would be concerned if I lost my job.

There's also communities where people will never get jobs and have no choice but to live off benefits. Parts of Middlesborough have over 80% unemployment and there's 1 job advertised for every 19 people claiming benefit. That's not an isolated case either. There's an article in the FT about it.

Cup of Tea- i do believe theres real poverty in the UK mainly concerning working people who have to pay rent, mortages, council tax et cetera funny that none of the 'socialists' seem to be too concerned about them.

Socialist groups, the trade union movement, and even the labour party to an extent are all very concerned, and are doing their best to help the working poor, who have had their wages and terms and conditions of employment slashed by this evil government and their friends.

There is always going to be a small minority of people who will do anything not to work and are happy to live off benefits for the rest of their lives, unfortunately these are the people that the likes of the Daily Mail pick up on.

decent working people cant get a council house as professional benefit claimants have taken them,86 per cent of  council tenants are benefit claimants, who do you think are the victims of the anti social behaviour of these people decent working people who have the misfortune to live near them and cant afford to move out,not sure how many of the socialsits on here live in such areas.

Decent working people cant get council houses because Thatcher sold them off cheaply  as a bribe to get re-elected, and local authorities were unable to spend the proceeds to replenish their housing stock. 86% of council tenants living off benefits seems a fantasy figure invented by the gutter right wing press to inflame hatred against anyone that refuses to support a right wing agenda.
