HORNCHURCH 2 HAYES & YEADING 0

Hornchurch, without Lewis Smith and Joey May, both suspended, finished the season in fine style with a convincing win over Hayes & Yeading, who did not manage a single shot on target, their only attempt coming in the second minute of stoppage time with a shot which sailed high and wide.

Hornchurch dominated thanks to a commanding performance from Reiss Noel in defence, and an equally commanding performance in midfield, where Frankie Curley ruled supreme.

Hayes & Yeading could do little other then defend against a Hornchurch team which pressed forward from the start. A series of long throws from Billy Coyne were headed away by Sam Cox and Tom Radmore, and it was something of a relief when Hornchurch had a throw from the left – but the relief was short lived when Rickie Hayles threw the ball even further, and Elliot Styles almost opened the scoring with a hard drive which hit a defender and cannoned away to safety.

Alex Bentley was playing out on the right flank, seemingly out of position, but it was his cross that gave Martin Tuohy an opening, and keeper Brandon Hall made an excellent save to turn the goal bound shot around the post. Hall then dealt capably with Chris Bourne’s inswinging corner.

Frankie Curley opened up the defence with a neat flick into the path of Kieron St Aimie, who was denied by Hall, and although the ball rebounded to St Aimie, Hall was again in position to save.

Hornchurch continued to threaten and when Tuohy slotted through to St Aimie, it was Hall again who came to the rescue with another fine save.

Hayes & Yeading rarely threatened, although they won a corner when Coyne headed away a long cross from the right wing, but Luke Williams’ kick was headed away by Styles.

Reiss Noel had needed lengthy attention in the first half, and it was something of a surprise when a substitution was made at the interval, when Simon Glover came on, not for Noel, but for Rickie Hayles, who had also received an injury shortly before half time.

Glover quickly slotted into place, and with Frankie Curley still very much in control in midfield, Hornchurch continued to force the pace.

The opening goal came when Hornchurch won a corner on the right. Michael Spencer sent the ball across, Elliot Styles gained possession and placed his pass neatly through the defence to MARTIN TUOHY, who calmly stoked the ball into the net.

Three minutes later it was Kieron St Aimie, with a neat turn to elude his marker, who provided the opening for MARTIN TUOHY to run on and score.

Hayes & Yeading had little to offer, and Hornchurch introduced Tambeson Eyong, for Bourne, and Wayne Gray, for Tuohy, who gave the visiting defence a difficult time.

Gray was closest to scoring, with a well-directed shot, whilst Curley hit a speculative shot narrowly wide of the post.

St Aimie was sent clear but Cox came back quickly to block the shot, whilst Eyong almost found a way through on the right.

The three points ensured that Hornchurch will be the first club to be given a reprieve should any other club drop out of the league, as they have finished on the same points, but with a better goal difference, than the clubs in the northern division of the Conference South.
