Points Tally & Season Appraisal

So our promotion dream is over for yet another year, I feel that now is a good time as any to appraise our season.

After 41 games we have 80 points. Should we win on Saturday, this will be 83 points from 42 games. Most other seasons this would have put us in the play-offs comfortably. (When Chesham won the play-offs 3 years ago, they finished 4th with 80 points from 42 games.) Having looked around at the other league tables, 80 points would, as it stands, put us:

  • 3rd in the Southern Premier and South & West
  • 2nd in the Ryman Premier
  • 4th in Ryman Division One North
  • 3rd in Ryman Division One South
  • 2nd in the Blue Square Conference South
  • 4th in the Blue Square Conference North

Now, should we feel aggrieved that the same points tally has only got us (at best) 6th in our division, or should we feel more aggrieved that Royston, Godalming, Beaconsfield and Biggleswade have achieved what we set out to do and have failed to do?

Should we accept that are getting no closer to promotion that we were 3 years ago, despite a seemingly large budget and money from our FA Cup run? Or should we say that it's time to take a step backwards in order to take 2 steps forward? Personally, I think a change is necessary for us to progress. (I know what some people on the other thread are saying about stability, but quite frankly, you could say exactly the same thing about any manager at any time, including the really bad ones! Alot of people on here weren't that keen on stability when they were calling for Sweetman's head 4 years ago, or when Steve Browne left in 2003 despite a good FA Cup run!)

At the end of the day, if we'd been offered a season that produced a fantastic FA Cup run but no promotion, we'd have said it was failure. If we'd been offered a season with no FA Cup run but promotion, we'd had said: SUCCESS.

Whichever way you look at it, we have failed to keep up with the footballing powerhouses of Biggleswade and Beaconsfield, and ground or no ground, FA Cup run or no FA Cup run, fixture backlog or no fixture backlog, that simply isn't good enough.

It just goes to show how many poor teams there are in this division, most other divisions are far more competitive. That explains why the top 7 or 8 teams can gain so many points.

HP9 Spot on The higher points totals being achieved in our league this season reflects the higher number of dire teams We have performed adaquately against the top teams weve lost to the teams currently 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 6th and drawn with the team currently 5th and also had some successses against them thats what would be expected Its the losses and draws against the very poor teams that have undone us again the team seems able to raise itself against the better teams but some players strut arrogantly around against the poor teams as if they have a right to win without breaking sweat this attitude and management failure to address it has kept us in this terrible league again

I still look back at that Uxbridge away game, where we were 2-0 at half time and cruising..... I'm affraid that was the start of the pattern for other games in the season where we didnt capitalise on first half dominance, which ended up costing us the play off place (at least).

Maybe missing out on the play offs could be the kick up the arse we need?

Or have we been saying this for the last couple of years (failure to get promoted will spur us on for the next season).....

games like that show we just seem to be lacking something in the squad. being clinical enough to get 2, 3, 4 goals ahead against lower sides when on top or at least the toughness to not just roll over when teams improve and attempt fightbacks. Hayes away was about only game we wrapped up by half time and it allowed us to control the game and cruise through 2nd half

so many games we wasted hatfuls of chances and then had no answer at all when teams show more fight. i guess mentally we think we are better than them and just take it for granted. we certainly have had far too many Jekyll and Hyde performances

Zut Alors! This thread has already gone spectacularly off topic!

Instead of discussing what went wrong this season and what needs to be done in order to get promoted next season, we are instead talking about the finer points of the French Language!

whatever translator you used, please never use them again.

I assume you meant to say "I told you so" which would be translated to - Je vous avais dit

staines you dont understand the game at all do you-if one adds a slight mistake the number of replies telling me so is many many more,as you have proven amongst others.gives people with sad lives and sad jobs something to rail against.

ok so " i told you so " -lets hope the club gets its £100 from ian ( i would rather i was wrong and we went up but any student of the beautiful game could have told you the same).

I do so love the fact that people seem to be more concerned with La Langue Francaise than with our failures this season :(

Go on then what do you suggest the club do, keep the status quo-that has not worked these last few years.I would change the manager only if a more proven one could be found ( I would like Terry Brown for the job ) Whoever gets the job needs to be a motivator and maybe guided by the old Brian Clough saying " If they don't score , we cannot lose ". He always maintained strengthen the team from the back first and ofcourse he proved it with 2 european cups .We on the other hand let in many silly goals and lost to teams we should have beaten easily .

Mark 44 You ask where the evidence is that there are a lot more poor teams this season in this league Take a look at the table It doesnt lie Last season the bottom six teams ended on 50,49,44,44,32 and 28 this season with a game to go the bottom six have got 35,35,31,27,23 and 0 very substantially less and for an obvious reason.

And last season the top teams finished on less points so weren't as good as this years top teams.

The argument isn't valid as the opposite is always true. The only way to check is by seeing how teams in our league did with comparison leagues teams
