Guernsey Players

Recommended Posts

To be honest I believe the Guernsey posters. The amount they must spend on travel and flights to away games, and then paying for CCL teams to go over there! I know they usually get gates of 1000+ but that wouldn't cover even that surely?

Think there's just to many people on here who dislike them. Good luck to them I hope they go as high as possible!!

Allstar I agree, GFC are a fantastic team and I too hope they continue up the non league ladder, but it really does amaze me that their 'followers' can be so blind. I have nothing against GFC but clearly the subject of money appears to touch a nerve for some reason. We all know that the squad will receive a payment of some kind.

The thing is Chubby, why would GFC pay their players? Their situation is so different from mainland clubs that there is no need! Prior to the formation of GFC all the players played for one of 7 local clubs. None of these clubs pay their players, its a completely amateur league. Therefore there is no paid alternative available to them, unlike in the UK where players will often be tempted from club-to-club by the contents of a brown envelope. So its not like anyone is going to say "oh, i'll go and play for Windsor 'cos they're going to pay me 50p a game" - there just isn't that monetary competion to play elsewhere. GFC is an opportunity for the best local players to a) represent their national side (effectively) and B) play at a higher level than has ever been available to them before. Both these things are more than enough incentive to get the players involved, none of them are looking for financial reward.

Maybe like someone has said they have personal sponsors that pay them in some way.. If they averaged 1000 fans per game for their 21 league games that 21,000 people seeing that companies advertising? That's excluding pre season friendlies, cup games and away games!

Does 'The Freedom Of Information Act' apply in Guernsey ?

No we do not have that, we make our own Laws as we are not part of the UK (politically)

As far as I'm aware it only costs a few hundred quid a season at most to sponsor a player and that goes to GFC not the player themselves.

Guernsey players do get paid in a way, they have a discount card which gives them 50% off at different shops etc.

try again

all community supporters, have a discount card that can get you various discounts, and promotions

I think he's right actually queues. I think players fe discounts above what the supporters get. But that's all they are, discounts. They still have to pay money to get stuff!

But 50% is a bit laughable, in a lot of places that would mean shops selling them at a loss.

From the ones I have spoken to they either have to make their time up or take it off their annual leave, or I guess lose the pay.

kind of puts into perspective how English based teams do not want to do it just once a season, when the Guernsey players do it multiple times. In the first season I know one of the Guernsey players was using his annual leave for every midweek away. His employers (very kindly) said that this season he could just go to games and make up the lost time elsewhere as things were going so well.

2 questions GL. How many teams were actually asked & refused to travel midweek to play GFC and on how many midweek dates could GFC have hosted a game given pitch / weather / airport / flight availability issues. I suspect the answer to both is very few, if any.

But pitch is OK on a weekend? Pitch is not that utilisied midweek. Found enough flight availability for weekends, even hosting four teams in four days on a Bank Holiday weekend. One team made enough fuss about playing on a Sunday.
