Hornchurch’s pre-match preparations were disrupted when the referee decided that their blue and white striped away strip was not acceptable, as it clashed with the black and white stripes of Dorchester. With no second strip available, they were offered an all white strip – this too was rejected by the referee. And so Hornchurch eventually took the field wearing yellow. Hornchurch were greeted by “Are we Canvey in disguise” from the appreciably large number of Hornchurch supporters who had made the lengthy evening trip. And they reacted accordingly, immediately taking possession and dominating the first half for lengthy periods. Lewis Smith created the first opening with a fine solo run which ended in an excellent shot that was saved by Jason Matthews. Chris Burne then dispossessed Ashley Nicholls gave the ball away just outside the area, but his shot was saved by Jason Matthews. The next move came to nothing when Elliot Styles – playing further forward than he normally does – overhit his pass and the ball ran out for a goal kick. Styles was then in action at the other end, clearing a shot from Tom Nichols off the line. But the ball was played back and a corner was conceded. This was partially cleared and the ball was played back to Nick Crittenden, whose centre found CHARLIE CLOUGH, whose header seemed to be going nowhere, until the ball dipped and went in via the post, past a surprised Joe Woolley. This was not the ideal start, but Hornchurch quickly came back, with a good run along the left wing by Chris Bourne, but his low cross into the middle eluded everyone. With Hornchurch pressing forward, Dorchester broke away and Kieffer Moore – who had scored twice for Truro when Hornchurch played there – attempted a shot from long range, which sailed over the bar, though close enough to cause a few concerns. Lewis Smith was creating numerous problems in the home defence, and it was Smith who started the best move of the half, when he gained possession just outside his own penalty area, played the ball quickly to Billy Coyne, and thence inside to Joey May, who sent Tambeson Eyong clear on the right. Eyong homed in on goal but was tackled by Jake Smeeton who conceded a corner. May floated the ball across and Matthews came a long way out of goal to make a clean catch. Hornchurch went close to scoring when Smith sent a long cross field pass out to Bourne, who ran along the left wing, and placed the ball invitingly across goal, where Eyong was unable to get the final touch before the ball rolled out of play for a goal kick. A long throw from Billy Coyne almost created a goal, only for Mark Jermyn to clear after Martin Tuohy had headed the ball goalwards. Smith was brought down and Joey May sent the free kick deep towards the far post where Styles powered in a header which went wide of the post. As half time approached Hornchurch continued to press, thought he closest they could get was a corner from Joey May which Charlie Clough headed away as the half time whistle went. Hornchurch came out for the second half full of confidence and immediately went close to leveling when Martin Tuohy tried a shot on the turn, but he hooked the ball narrowly wide of the post. Dorchester were struggling to maintain their lead, and when Smith was sent sprawling this led to the first booking of the night, Jake Smeeton being shown a yellow care. It took some considerable time before the free kick could be taken, as the Dorchester wall’s version of ten yards did not match up with anyone else’s. Eventually the wall was moved back, Joey May took the free kick, and REISS NOEL headed home. This was Reiss Noel’s 78th appearance for Hornchurch, and his first goal for the club. Just five minutes later Dorchester made their first attacking move of the half, and the ball was played into the goalmouth from the right, and KIEFFER MOORE neatly turned it into the net. Hornchurch continued to press, and the home defence came under an aerial bombardment from Billy Coyne, whose lengthy throws caused consternation but were usually headed away, apart from one which was back headed across goal and wide of the far post. It was from another Coyne throw that Tuohy fired in a shot which deflected for a corner. May sent the ball over deep to the far post and a further corner resulted, but Nathan Walker headed away to safety. Kieron St Aimie replaced Billy Coyne, and Dorchester threatened when they advanced on the left and won a corner. The ball was sent over and Walker turned sharply and Joe Woolley saved his shot from close range in fine style. Michael Spencer and Wayne Gray came on, and Hornchurch continued to press. Tuohy was booked for dissent as yet another free kick was awarded. Hornchurch almost leveled when Lewis Smith took a free kick some fifteen yards out from the penalty area. His shot cleared the wall and keeper Matthews dived full length to tip the ball over the bar. May took the corner, and Reiss Noel came in a speed, but his time his header went over the bar. Yet another May corner created confusion in the home defence, before the ball was eventually booted off the line to safety. As the match went into stoppage time, Hornchurch continued to press forward, but they conceded a free kick close to the half way line. The ball was played out to Ben Watson the left wing, and was promptly played back into the goalmouth where KIEFFER MOORE was again the first player to react, to ensure that the three points remained in Dorset. Dagger03
Just to confirm the two HFC bookings - Tuohy and Hayles. The Dorchester web site incorrectly lists Lewis Smith as being booked. And - on a separate note - I quite liked the yellow strip - should this be our change colour for next season?
Fat Tom Daley
I quite like the yellow kit. With black shorts would be good! On a note, Reiss has scored before at home v Aveley before
