FA Trophy - Wingate & Finchley 0 Hornchurch 2

With there still being plenty of FA Cup excitement at the club our first game this season in the FA Trophy has not had much attention. But this win at Wingate & Finchley puts us through (I think) to the furthest stage we have ever reached in that competition as well as giving us interest in Monday's second round draw.

It took us a while to get into our stride today, and Wingate & Finchley defended in numbers presumably hoping to get a breakaway goal. Goalkeeper Andy Walker pulled off two great saves from Steve West headers in the 27th and 35th minutes and Wingate & Finchley's gameplan nearly paid dividends in the 36th minute when they broke from defence and put Sam Sloma clear, but he could only blast wide. We took the lead in the 38th minute. A Mark Graham cross to the far post found John Martin. His shot was pushed away by Walker, but Bradley Allen rose to head in from about 12 yards. The game changed instantly with Wingate & Finchley now having to try and commit men forward. However, we now looked even more dangerous and Allen nearly scored a minute later with a turn and shot from the edge of the area which went narrowly over. With 5 minutes to go there was panic in the Wingate area with Walker having to make a double block from Allen and John Martin shots. Walker wasn't quick enough to stop Martin's second follow-up, but his shot canoned off the bar. Right at the end of the half a thunderbolt shot from Adam Locke 20 yards out also slammed onto the bar.

An early second half chance for Wingate's Danny Boateng brought out a good save from Danny Gay, but within three minutes we doubled our lead. A defender trying to prevent a corner only lofted the ball into the penalty area where Andrew Martin headed down and Andy Douglas shot into the roof of the net. There really was little respite for the Wingate defence and Walker had to make a good save from Andrew Martin in the 68th minute and watched with relief as another well struck volley from Adam Locke whistled narrowly over two minutes later. Locke narrowly missed again in the 81st minute and Walker again had to be sharp to deny Andy Douglas 3 minutes later.

Line-up:- Gay, Stirling (Gooding 79), Kerrigan, Adedeji, West, Locke, Ada (A Martin 45), J Martin, Allen (Rowland 79), Douglas, Graham. Subs not used:- Southon, Collier (GK).
