Reserve teams

Recommended Posts

An admirable decision by a Club to bring Youth and Ressies through, but can I ask this question, how many are now 1st team Regulars?Hayden Bird when he was 1st team Manager used to regularly use Youth and Ressie players, when 1st Team Regulars, did not fancy a Cold/long distance away game, but only to fill the bench.Players such as Jay Gasson,Andre McCollin,Sam Clayton, were regularly called up to fill these slots, but rarely got more than 15 minutes,if that.

Hi smudge,

I'd say we have 1 youth boy always starting for 1st. Probably 2 or 3 youth/ reserves in 1st team squad but don't always start.

Probably 6 youth teamers always start for reserves one of which is only just 16.

At Camberley this season we have used 11 youth players in the reserves and 5 are regulars. There have only been 3 games this season when youth players did not play. We also have 5/6 regular players that are in their first year out of youth football, although not all of these came through our ranks. However, opportunities in the 1st team squad have been limited with only Jon Burch and Jake Meade holding down a place so far.

They will - imagine if Woking Sutton and AFC Wimbledon had their reserves in the CCL 1. at the very best one side may get above these and into the top 3 every season

If this was the case Nigel, then it wouldn't be much of a challenge for them, which would defeat the object of them playing there in the first place. Personally I'm not a fan of it and it clogs the pyramid up with teams that are not really a part of it.

I fully understand and respect your desire to keep a Reserve team. For us, we made the decision to drop our Reserves and Youth team five years too late. Last season many players who appeared for us were loaned by K's or Leatherhead, and that was when we actually had a Reserve team.

Then when you throw in the cost of running it, (inclusive of an annual ground hire cost to Raynes Park) it becomes completely unsustainable to a club without its own ground. That particular penny finally dropped at the end of last season after a number of prompts, and whilst our Manager would understandably tell you that he would prefer a Reserve team in a perfect world, he understands the reasoning and the financial situation.

As for the Youths, we do have a substantial number of Colts teams, but they currently come under separate jurisdiction, so don't cost us anything to run in terms of finance or manpower. Our old side went pretty much lock, stock and barrel to Horley where they've done very well.
