Reserve teams

Recommended Posts

It looks like this season could see the end of CCFL Reserve teams.

I heard Suburban League approached 6 CCFL teams witha view to tranferring.

Of 6 , 2 want to transfer, 2 don't and 2 may drop reserves all together.

The trouble I see with Suburban is there is too much travel (more than for 1st teams). This will continue unless they can attract a substantial number of new clubs, 6 CCFL will not be enough

I think with money being more of an issue reserve teams will disappear and the route for youth to climb the ladder will go.

Ressies football is evaporating rapidly. More and more clubs are realising they are just a drain on a clubs finances. At best 3 or 4 may represent the first tem throughout the season. Shame but as the Adventures of Stevie V would say, money talks, money talks.

Not even 3 or 4 the gulf is way to big and the reserve lads just aint up to it imo

I know that Duncs will shoot this down as he doesnt agree with it but a local Youth League are looking into starting an U21 league next season to keep people playing after their "Youth" Careers are over. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

Duncs mate the gulf is too big at the top 5 - 10 clubs. The rest can easily occupy 3 or 4 ressie players and not be dismantled too much. Mark my words, Ressie football is finished. Academy sides at ryman prem / blue sq south will replace it and the decent players within them will be farmed out on loan to step 5/6 clubs who will give them 50 notes a game.

In my opinion Reserve teams only work in stable clubs. They allow fringe first team players fit or players returning from injury to get match fit. they allow developing youngsters experience and a gateway to senior football.

To me Camberley have always made use of the system in this way and from afar I see it working at Horley, South Park to name 2. At Camberley this year there has been too much instability for things to work but Im sure they will get things back on track

.

Another instance is Sandhurst where the Manager cannot keep players and therefore the Reserves appear to be a waste of time. I hear they have used near a 100 different players this year and therefore how can the Reserves work? Similarly last year. Ash satrted a reserve team 2 years ago and I hear are dropping theres next year so to me no stability.

In times of dwindling money the youth, reserves, first team set up I believe is the way forward but only if the club structure and the Football Management Team have the foresight to see the bigger picture

Are Badshot Lea ground sharing at Ash next season? Maybe that is the reason they are having to drop their reserves.

From our perspective, we dropped our reserve team, as the costs of running the team outweigh the benefits. We are planning to review this in the future.

Molesey have always made good use of their youth set-up and Egham have had a successful side for the last couple of years, although not sure how many have progressed through to the first team in that time.

I half agree with you Mr Fixit. Stable clubs are always going to make better use of their other sides but even when clubs are struggling that can be when these teams become more important than ever. When the first team manager left at Bracknell 2 games into the season we wouldn't have put a team out had it not been for the Reserves. It may not have brought them any success but sometimes thats more important than paying a fine or diminishing a club's perception for not being able to field a team.

I think it comes down to the management. It takes a brave manager to progress Reserve or Youth players. Some will never take that chance - in which case it's pretty pointless having a Reserve team. Some players may not have that option because of their league position be it at the top or the bottom. Personally I think if a player's good enough he's old enough or if your team is losing continuously and a Reserve player is playing well, could he do any worse than a First team player in his position but I can understand why managers go for the tried and tested.

Well from horleys point of view I believe 4 or 5 reserve players have played for 1st team this year. Also 4 or 5 youth players have also played 1st team. So as a club we try to do the right thing by bringing the youngsters through. I know southpark do the same.

An admirable decision by a Club to bring Youth and Ressies through, but can I ask this question, how many are now 1st team Regulars?Hayden Bird when he was 1st team Manager used to regularly use Youth and Ressie players, when 1st Team Regulars, did not fancy a Cold/long distance away game, but only to fill the bench.Players such as Jay Gasson,Andre McCollin,Sam Clayton, were regularly called up to fill these slots, but rarely got more than 15 minutes,if that.

It is pretty clear that reserve team football is struggling at all levels.

This talk of step 3/4 reserve teams coming into our division 1 is a major concern.

If, say, we only had 14 div 1 teams next season, they could play each other 3 times = 39 matches.

What the powers that be need to do is help and support the step 7 clubs in their quests for step 6 football.

I have already offered my support and services to promote the Surrey Elite League next season as I believe this is the only way to get our step 6 division up to the numbers required.

Another alternative is a merger of div 1 and Sussex 2/3 maybe under a new name?

as far as the Suburban League approaching six clubs from the CCL, is that allowed? Or is a provisional agreement in place where there is an exchange or reserve teams? I am aware of our clubs being consulted re reserve teams in Div 1 but wont they block promotion places if they finish in the top 3?

We will never ditch our reserve side at Westfield.

The chairman makes it very clear that he wants Westfield to put out 2 sides every Saturday, both teams to do well and then come in and have a drink at the bar just like they did in the 70's and 80's.. If you create the right spirit at the club players are happy to play for the reserves. We see our reserve as an extension of the 1st team. I agree all these fake academys dont help but to us it's hindered youth development more than anything. Personally i cant understand why clubs shell out £50 to players yet cant/dont want to run a reserve side, at some point it will backfire.

We want to stay in the CCL Reserve league next season but if rumours are to be belived than sides are pulling out and were be left with no choice but to apply to join the suburban. I'd imagine any CCL sides without lights will go to Elite reserve league

We had 13 available players last night :( , four of which play regularly in our reserves and have played in the first team this season Smudge.

They will - imagine if Woking Sutton and AFC Wimbledon had their reserves in the CCL 1. at the very best one side may get above these and into the top 3 every season

There are 12 teams in that division this season, two of which are CCL sides. - http://www.football.mitoo.co.uk/LeagueTab.cfm?TblName=Matches&DivisionID=5186&LeagueCode=SEIFL2012

I think the conference type clubs will remain in the Suburban. it's the Leatherhead and Walton types that are being mooted I believe
