v Northwood

Recommended Posts

I can't help feeling that we have been an over achieving middle of the table team for the last four years. A friend of mine who usually watches football at the same level in the north and has followed non league football for more than forty years came to Ashford where I thought we played reasonably well. His view, without having seen any other games in our division, was that we simply didn't look like a team who had what it takes to win promotion and I have to agree. Only one person's opinion based on one game but interesting. Still a mathmatical chance that we can get there but it is going to take one hell of a turnaround in form. Time is approaching for some changes, I think.

think its easy to say the players didn't show passion etc. we didn't play that great but we weren't terrible we just seem to take it for granted that we will win this sort of game and continue to fail to put the game to bed. yes their keeper made some smart stops 2nd half but we really shouldn't have given him a hope to stop at least 1 or 2 of them

was yet again feeling like one of those days where nothing quite fell for us and wouldn't you know it the right back who had just done his very best to incite the crowd pops up with a goal from a hopeful strike which unfortunately Jacko wasn't up to stopping. their 1st goal was just pathetic as well

as soon as we went 1-0 up early on it showed have been a near stroll in the park as they offered absolutely nothing between then and their 2 corners the 2nd of which resulted somehow in the equaliser

Royston is to be a game to do justice to now as lose it and we have a near impossible task making playoffs even

Not being able to beat Barton or Northwood, even the fatigue shouldn't have set in just yet, is nothing short of an absolute farce.

I've said before that we appear to be making the same mistakes that have cost us for the past 3 years. The apparent inability for the management to either motivate the players for important games, or to be able to change the game when things aren't working, are costing us dearly. This MUST change if we are to progress as a team and get out of this league. But we've had same old same old for much of the past 3 years now, and it shows little sign of changing.

Now a second game in a row that Barton rovers have tweeted their joy at us losing. Bunch of morons

I took a look at their Twitter page after reading your comment Mark44. Wow, they really do have this obsession with Slough don't they.

And also, noticed theres this guy associated with Biggleswade who also seems to be obsessed with Slough too.

I see they commented somewhere about 'village idiots' so whether someone on Twitter or here (or at a match) called them village idiots and its stuck with them since, I dont know....

Either way, the rest of the league seem to be loving our recent form / results.

P.S - yes, congrats to Jacko on his 100th apperance, knew him well as a youngster (and scored a goal or two against him at youth level ;)

Tonight as others have mentioned Adam Martin was superb.

So, so frustrating tonight, the amount of rushed clearances and passes tonight that found a Northwood player was shocking and it happened time-and-time again. That said I don't think we deserved to lose the game.

If I was Bates i'd be on the phone to Sweeney and Sinclair tomorrow trying to get them to play some part this season as I think those two in particular could play a huge part and would certainally improve the squad and our options. I'd also play Kyle in central midfield, where he has much more influence on the game and look to get get Sean Fraser back in the side.

In my opinion we also have not replaced NBH as well - he was a huge loss in both boxes.

This season is far, far from over and we must remember if we can get our act together we are capable of beating anyone on our day in this league. COYR

I think Simon Sweeney would be useful as a right-sided centre half in a three man defence or just as an orthodox right back. Steve Perkins and Alex Brown are too slow in these positions. Due to age,Steve Perkins is better between two central defenders,as proved last night against Northwood in the 2nd half.

He would also make a an excellent sweeper/holding midfielder,if we don't ask him to do too much running up and down the pitch.

Alex Brown is better on the right side but needs someone who's quick in the right back position and someone next to him, as a central defender, who can cover his back when he gets turned by quick players. Thought we missed Ashley Deeney or Sean Fraser in that right back position last night.

Not sure that Steve Sinclair is the answer.Jake Parsons is a better player now,due to age and speed. I think we are missing NBH but also a creative player in the middle of the park.Stuart Swift brought that to our team, although a maddening whinger, you knew he made up for it with his footballing skills and his ability to create an opening.

The thing is, if Jake doesn't create, Slough begin to lack ideas how to break teams down. A new tricky left sided player would be better bet than Steve Sinclair coming back IMO and I'm not convinced Dominic Rhone is the answer either.Although his pace would have helped in last night's game,as the pace of the Northwood number 11 did to us.

Personally, put Dave Deeney in the middle of Brown and Woozley on Saturday. Then, play Fraser right wing back, Murphy/Rhone left wing back, put Martin & Anthony in the middle of midfield and play Parsons in a free role behind 2 from Burnell, Smith & O'Toole!

Any chance of getting Sonner back? By Christ we need his passion and energy!

Don't believe Sean Sonner is the answer.

Your team choice,CR,is a good one but currently we need Kyle Anthony's mobility in our defence, and so far I've not been impressed with Kyle Anthony's performances in midfield. Like your idea of Jake Parsons behind the front two but Steve Bateman never tried Steve Sinclair there,so what chance Jake Parsons.

I actually think Ed Smith would be ideal for this role,as he links play between midfield and attack better than our other 2 strikers we have and is an intelligent footballer, something needed in that role.

Also think Dave Deeney would be a waste of his midfield talents to put him in defence.Would like to see him play more as a proper holding midfielder, though.

The problem we have with our defence, is that we have little time to work out what our best system/combination is, given the games coming up thick and fast. Keep changing it leads to misunderstanding and confusion among the players and thus we concede soft goals.

For Royston ,I'd play a 3-5-2 which slides to a 4-4-2 when we attack.I'd go with Warrington in goal if fit, stick with Anthony, Perkins, Woozley as central defenders with Danny Murphy as his usual defensive left wing back and Jake Parsons as right attack wing back, thus having Anthony's athleticism in the right back/right side centre back, as cover when needed.

Three centre midfielders of Dave Deeney as the holding midfielder with Adam Martin and Adam Logie.

Up front I'd go back to the Burnell/Smith combination for this game.

My bench would be O'Toole,Fraser,Bateman,Burgess,Chandiram.

That was our 5th game in 9 days and the players all have full time jobs, Danny Murphy said last night that tiredness was becoming a factor. We had enough chances to win last night but some good saves and dogged defending prevented it. Wolves boss Dean Saunders was moaning that they played sat+mon and there pro players so let's give the players a break. We can still make the playoffs so get behind the team

Couldnt make it at the last minute last night--sounds like I didnt miss much ....................the lack of passion is very concerning

So worth recording that I happened to bump into one of our senior players on Tuesday who told me (and I quote) that " some of the players are just not on the right planet when it comes to this sort of fight "---even more concerning I think !

I mentioned this months back, now you all see the same picture, but hey I don't expect any recognition of my footballing nous, years of experience in non league football aids my knowledge of the game.

I did welcome Bateman initially because anything was better than Sweetman & Roberts,But he was also in over his head-lets all hope Terry Brown or some one similar takes pity on us and dose not ask for a fortune!!

rebelade Thats exactly my point No intelligence being shown regards squad rotation On the plus side the team does seems to perform well when not expected to No team has a better home record than Royston just 7 points dropped from 51 and only 1 loss (and that to Godalming) just the sort of situation the team tends to pull a surprise lets keep our fingers crossed
