Guernsey v Spennymoor...liveish updates.

The atmosphere at Guernsey was very odd when we went out there with organised singing & clapping, lyrics sheets and of course that bl**dy lion (fine line between 'funny' and 'inappropriate'). I remember at the time we likened it to people pretending to be football supporters, although I appreciate that is doing a disservice to a vast number of Guernsey fans (the non-vocal majority?). The ground seemed to largely consist of grannies and small children, although some might argue that just says something about Guernsey itself. ;)

This thread is making me chuckle though, as though a team can win simply by being 'bigger' and talking to the referee. Perhaps that shows a touch of naïvety on Guerney's part? After all, it's the first time they've faced a Northern League side who, along with some of the Eastern clubs, are easily a step above the CCL and perhaps it was inevitable that Guernsey might struggle.

It's a shame for Guernsey (and the CCL as a whole) not to reach the final, although of course it's not over yet, just rather unlikely.

I also see they're still allowing people to stand on the track. I hope that the 4,290 people had more than six toilet cubicles to go in! One of our number queued until the 65th minute, and there were only 1,800 there then.

I have never seen a team who were big and spent the entire match with the whole team in the refs ear win anything. What say you Sweeney ;)

This has made me laugh Sweeney. Your lot are an absolute disgrace and your ground is a dump with zero atmosphere. The players at Guildford take their lead from the management who are terrible. Take a look at the naughty boys table in the NLP. Perhaps the point here is Spennymoor are good at talking to the ref unlike the clowns down at the Spectrum. I've lived in Guildford and the surrounding area all my life and theres no interest in the football club - you'd love to have regular crowds that were 5% of what Guernsey had Saturday so simmer down. as for Sweeney, I've seen you all in action and it was more like PC Plod.

Interesting piece on the GFC website today. The second leg will be kicking off at 5.30pm as the FA won't allow GFC to stream games live between 2.15pm and 5.15pm on Saturdays as it's against UEFA regulations.

Is it just for the Vase or is this the end of GFCTV?

On a selfish note - I hope the game at Spennymoor goes ahead as planned. We're in Guernsey next weekend and I'd like to watch us play while I'm over there. If our match is postponed I'll just have to settle for a weekend of drinking....

This is interesting in that the rule has always been there, so why does it all of a sudden apply now? Haven't previous Guernsey Vase games been streamed at 3pm, along with numerous league and cup games? Presumably the FA deem this match to be of sufficient importance to invoke this ruling that was, ironically, brought in to protect lower league clubs attendances. Tempted to contact the FA to see what their line is on all this. So I wonder how we know where the line is drawn as to whether a match/league/cup is of sufficient importance to the FA to invoke this rule? If Guernsey were to climb the pyramid, at which point would the FA pull the plug on 3pm streaming - Ryman Prem? Conference South? What if say, Maidstone Utd (getting home crowds of near 2,000 in R1S and a decent away following) suddenly decided they could make a wedge from streaming the away games they already film for £4 a throw? Allowed or not? And if Maidstone are allowed, could a club in the league above do the same etc etc.

On another note, i'm a little surprised Spennymoor has agreed to the change in KO time - fee agreed maybe??

Spennymoor are hoping it'll pull in more punters. Sunderland have an early kick off and the other semi at Shildon is only 8 miles away so that's a possible double as well. They're also hoping some Newcastle United fans may turn up.

Regarding the broadcasting rights - it was said elsewhere, I think by the AFC Croydon fella, that Croydon Athletic weren't allowed to do it when they were in the Ryman League. It depends how strictly leagues and the FA protect their copyrights. The higher you go, the more likely they will do it, and take people to court who don't comply with cease and desist letters although, as FootballDataCo have recently found out, sometimes the European Courts will rule against certain copyright claims.

I did urge GFC to ask the FA about streaming Vase games on another thread a while ago. They kept saying they had the permission of the home club but it's not the home club's choice for FA competitions. Maybe they have finally got around to asking and the FA have said no or maybe, as you mention, the FA have a cut-off point.

The atmosphere in the semi final was one of the best we have ever had at the Lane. That was cracking. Tell me is 'Speedo, Speedo' still playing for you at full back? His attitude was great throughout and the short throw into the crowd at the end was a nice touch.

I've been keeping an eye on Guildford and they seem to be more than holding their own in the Evostick. Are there any major challenges in the new league? Have you noticed any major differences in the oppositions approach to playing?

Good question - their (GC) league position suggests they're comfortable at that level without any big changes, and could have pushed for promotion save for a major dip in form just before and after the Christmas period.

I think they are the 2nd best side GFC have faced - they were very decent and unfortunately for them came up against GFC in full flow and at full strength (inc Zico, Gus etc). Spenny are stronger and can play as well as be direct and physical but then I think they'd psss step 4 and settle mid table/play off contention in Step 3.
