Wingate & Finchley vs Enfield Town

A Good result and bounced back well from what i thought was an awful first half an hour, they really couldnt handle us from set pieces and W & F's performance petered out. The team is on a decent run now and some players are really performing well i.e. Kirby in recent weeks. I still feel that one or two are not particuarly offering much at present to the team and we are 'carrying them through games'.

W&F were on the front foot and very quick to every ball from kick-off.

A slip by Jey from our corner first corner of the match after 3 mins led to a quick breakaway by W&F. A cross from the right was nodded home and we were 1 down before we had time to scratch our arses.

We never even got going after that for the next 30 mins or so. They looked very dangerous down the left with their full back combining well with the very dangerous number 11, who was very unlucky not to score mid way through the first half. After cutting in from the left he curled a right foot shot from about 20 odd yards that had Imber beaten, but it hit the inside of the far post and rolled across the line behind Imber.

Kirby was leading by example at the back; some superb expletives that eventually got the Town going. That and probably the pace W&F were trying to play at was just too much for them to sustain for 45 mins, never mind 90.

Anyway, 35+mins and a short corner to Bryan was whipped in beautifully, the resulting melee had Kendall trying to stab the ball into the goal, only for it to be stopped by the arm of a W&F defender on the line. I'm sure Tom will have a picture of this. No penalty though, despite load appeals from on the pitch, behind the goal and on the sidelines.

About 2 mins later and a shot by Gunz I think just oouside the box was handled inside. A harsh decision but justice served as we should have had a pen a few minutes earlier and W&F should have been down to 10 men.

McGliesh cooly finished (or McLeish as the W&F announcer seemed to call him) and we went inside level. After the up tempo barage of attacks that was thrown at the Town, they did well to find their feet, started to pass it towards the end of the half, and I think we were all grateful to go in at HT all square.

Second half, and it was noticeable how strong the wind was that we played into for the first 45 mins. Their keeper was struggling with his kick outs, and we carried on as we finished the first half.

Tyler was causing their right back problems, Gunz was battering through their defence, and McGleish was making life difficult for their two centre backs. Add in great covering in midfield by Hammett and Bards and we were certainly not as ragged as we were in the first half hour.

Kirby's goal was from a simple free kick, floated in and nodded home. The last laugh to Captain Fantastic (or should that be Fat-tastic ;-) ?), silencing the W&F supporters who were giving him abuse. Unlucky boys!

Highlight for me was a great rugby tackle by Bryan to stop a quick break by W&F! Best yellow card of the night (and there were a few). Kirby's yellow wasn't bad either mind you, diving after the ball with his arms while on the ground.

It was not an easy victory though. We went to sleep and they missed a couple of sitters, especially a free header from about six yards after a great cross from the right. Steve and Jason rightly screaming at the defence to concentrate and stop ball watching.

Great discipline showed by the whole team to run the clock down. Subs Laird and Hunt showed some very neat touches when they came on, and Hunt and Gunz were superb at keeping the ball in the corner to wind down the 4 mins of stoppage time.

Attendance of only 149 listed here? http://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/enfield/match/6396. Seemed far more than that. must have been about 100 Town fans there?

So, after the 3-2 defeat at Carshalton, our league record now reads:

P8, W4, D2, L2, F13, A6, PTS 14 (out of 24).

Players have responded magnificently, manager and assistants are getting us more organised, and we're playing some very attractive football at times. Well done to all concerned.

Sure do. Unfortunately Adam caught the autofocus but I think it's clear enough. With all the bodies I think the linesman (on my wing) can be excused. I'm not sure where the ref was.

Extended match highlights are below. 22 mins long (i think) is the longest video i've done. Shows it was a penalty and maybe we could of had one before that with Kendall's effort on the line.

Kirbs was immense again and his smile over to the Wingate fans who had been giving him some major (and potty mouthed) stick all night summed up the night for me. Lairdinho showed one or two good touches when he came on especially the turn and shot in the box. I think he will be a good signing once he's got a few more games under his belt. Bryan's late "forward's challenge" is included and he was rightly booked.. it came just moments after Rifat's awful challenge on Tyler which he was booked for but looking at the replay he could of been sent off I think. Studs up and knee high??

COME ON YOU TOWNERS!!! stay watching at the end for a round up of the match with some musical accompaniment in the background.

Not sure I totally agree - it wasn't high enough to be dangerous / violent conduct (to be fair, he clearly did it with the intention of bringing him down to break up play), and there were covering defenders, meaning that it wasn't a clear goalscoring chance... It looked at lot worse due to the speed the player was running at, and to his credit, the player got up and didn't react. Yellow card the right decision for me. That's not to say every ref would see it the same though...
