Best captain I have saw was you Sean at Staines. Passion, Fiery, always playing every game as your last. Also played a big part on Lammas winning the league too. Another one for has to be Ben Whatford the last Staines skipper, had ever quality. Pitty a cruciate knee injury has retired him. Mustard centre half.

Kind words 4-5-1 i loved my time at lammas an i wasnt fishing for comments ;) ive never played under a skipper for long enough to admire one of my own and am curious as to what players, fans an coaches see an admire in a skipper.

unfortunately for ben his knee is done an agree a top cb id have him an stu bamford on par with each other

A skipper is a leader of Men,by his actions on and off the Pitch.Sean you do have these attributes when on/off the Pitch, alas a Red Card now and again lets you down.

Spot on Smudge - a good skipper would act to diffuse volatile situations to keep his teammates out of trouble, and would never argue with or swear at a referee. Unfortunately there are very few "Bobby Moore" characters in the game these days (nor are there many Jack Taylor's come to think of it)

Never seen a captain win a game on his own, stupid thread for self gratification IMO, I worry about this lad, it's not healthy to love your yourself like this, he will go blind if he continues.

The best Captain is without doubt the one with all the Fish Fingers!!!

Completely agree with this, too many times you see a teams captain as the one who shouts the loudest whether it be to drive the team on or aimed at the referee which is is not proactive and filters down through the team / club. In my opinion and in no particular order a good skipper needs:

- To always be approachable to the officials on and off the pitch and be respectful and polite regardless of how much they disagree with something, it is one thing to question politely when felt appropriate, another to argue every point. The skipper should be the go between for officials and players when required.

- To ensure that their team does not get on the officials backs, no matter how frustrated you get with the 'men in black', it never helps your teams cause to get their back up further.

- To be a leader and someone that has the respect of the entire team including the management (Which I beleive they are actually a part of).

- To be able to pick up a team when needed to through encouragement and be upbeat regardless of the situaton.

- To be approachable by all fellow players, particularly the younger ones, at the end of the day they are learning from the skipper for the future.

- To be intelligent enough to be able to deal with anything thrown at them and choose the correct approach to solving the situation in an instant.

- A sensible head on their shoulders and no hint of red mist.

- To be vocal on the pitch and ensure others around them are talking to each other.

A skipper doesn't win a game as stated above but he dictates the way in which a team perform and behave, you often hear that a referee 'lost the game' but in my mind that should also be attributable to the team leaders on the pitch in most instances.

I also think you can tell a lot from a club by their choice of skipper.
