You are the ref!

I was watching TRS's great coverage of yesterday's Staines Lammas v Frimley Green game this morning and wondered the following.......

After about 4 mins 10 secs there is a challenge by a Staines player (blue) on a Frimley player (red) where the ref gives a foul to Frimley. Cue various comments from the sidelines from parties I assume on both sides.

I would be interested to hear what you would have given, in your honest opinion?

Besides the Free Kick, did the Ref take any action against the Staines Lammas player? He beckons player towards him in video.Minimum a yellow possible Red.However the Frimley player saved him probably from a booking, because he avoided the challenge, and got to his feet immediately.

No card was given, Smudge.

Definitely a no-win situation for the ref, with one person saying a great challenge and another saying a terrible challenge! Looking at it in slomo, the Lammas player does jump into it a bit with one foot off the ground. He gets the ball, but we're told these days that doesn't matter. I was a bit surprised the ref didn't show a yellow card, but then again he surprised me on several occasions during the match.

Consider: Did he endanger the safety of his opponent?

Did have some further thoughts on that and some other bits, but decided the video speaks for itself imho.

Think the referees remit here should be to punish the potential of the challenge as well as it's outcome.

The first challenge here, where the player lunges in (approx 4 min) is worthy of at least a caution. This would hopefully send a message to all that this sort of challenge is not acceptable. Remember, playing the ball is not an excuse for a poor challenge.

The incident where the player receives a red card (8.50 min) looks innocuous though the referees view point may have suggested otherwise. Player reaction is also fairly low key so perhaps a yellow would have been sufficient.

Compare that to the player reaction at 9.30 min. Imo the red 10 is fortunate to remain on the pitch, however had the referee penalised the shirt pull on the half way line by blue 4 seconds before the whole situation may have been avoided.

While I think it's unwise to referee entirely based on player reaction, it can tell you a fair amount and refereeing to expectation at this level is key.
