Always Gate
I am sure there is a reason why, so could someone please tell me why the bad areas of the pitch are not covered when there is a forecast of heavy rain. I know that there has been a great effort put into repairing the pitch so is it not possible to do this.
hangthedj
There are a few reasons why it's not possible to cover the pitch, the first simply being money. For a cover to be effective, it would have to cover the entire pitch, otherwise the water will simply run under the covers, water will always run to the lowest point. A cover big enough and strong enough to hold up to the fierce HDP winds would be expensive. Then there also the issue of finding a way to anchor the cover in place, as well as moving a cover that big. Hope that covers it for you, no pun intended. Always Gate
No longer in the dark. However I only thinking of the bad bits.
JRC
Why not start by aeration? This will allow the pitch to drain more easy an also helps towards the repair of the pitch..
dflman
There are 4 or 5 people who will confirm that aeration has taken place - that is not the problem
hangthedj
The compacted layer that is causing the problems cannot be aerated with a garden fork, its deeper than that. All forking serves to do is remove surface water, however, the water isn't currently going anywhere once in the holes, or at least if it is, its moving at a very slow rate. Always Gate
So if that area is covered by whatever means it would help
NewBlue123
Think all hangthedj is saying is a cover over the wet areas isn't enough as they are low areas and the water presumeably would run underneath the covers

Can the compacted layer be aerated with the right equipment or should it be left as it is please?
hangthedj
Yeah, a verti-drain machine would help to alleviate the problem, a rather costly temporary solution though.
DEREK
I agree that the really wet areas could be protected, Jim Cullen used to put rolls of plastic sheeting down and hold them in place with anything heavy, not ideal but never had any games called off. More rain due tonight and for the rest of the week. I blame JP.
dflman
Did Jim Cullen have a season where it started raining heavily in November and didn't stop much for weeks and weeks ? We surely all now realise that there are a lot of things wrong with the basic foundations of the pitch and it needs a total overhaul in the summer. Whether that means another 6 inches on the top surface or digging out and the chalk drilled right out is not for me to say as I don't have the qualification to. Tivoli Woods nearby are almost totally flooded now because the water is not draining away sufficiently
BlueGate Alan
Did JP nick the rolls of plastic then Derek?? To be fair the pitch in those days drained off better too because of the slope most of the time.
Tesco Bazza
Maybe it should be suggested that plans for a new ground/stadium upgrade should include a retractable roof!

Jab_n17
by any chance did Buster Bloodvessel leave a pair of his underpants laying around when he left that would cover about two thirds of the pitch
