Leiston postponment

A couple of points about the recent fall out form the Leiston match postponement.

The first thing to bear I mind that like all clubs, we are under pressure from the league to get scheduled fixtures played.

The second thing to say is that our approach to communication is that we try to be as professional as we can. So when our match in Lowestoft was called off at short notice for example, while it was clearly disappointing to everyone, we did not criticize a fellow club through the official site or any other channels. If other clubs and their officials choose to behave differently, that’s down to them but it’s not the way we like to conduct ourselves.

Other people had already suggested as much but Graham worked tirelessly to prepare the pitch as best he could after a period of really poor weather and for anyone to suggest that we did not make our best effort to stage the game is disingenuous at best.

With everything we had done, we were convinced the game would be given the go ahead, which is why we opened the turnstiles until the match referee indicated his concern. But as we have said before the final decision is the match referee’s. (It’s interesting to note that matches are not called off in late season when some surfaces are rutted, very hard and according to players, more dangerous than muddy pitches.)

Supporters can rest assured that the club also acted professionally in ensuring that hot food and hospitality was available to the Leiston players and officials before their journey home.

There have been a number of comments about the motivation of the referee to call the game off. Let me be clear, the club does not subscribe to some of the views expressed. We may not agree with the decisions that have been made; for example to call matches off at Lowestoft and against Leiston, and to continue the Cray game in such appalling conditions, but it is grossly unfair to call the referee’s integrity into question.

I hope that’s clarified a couple of things.

Wellsie's post is very considered and balanced and I heartily concur with the sentiments expressed.

I don't question the integrity of our referees, but their decision making abilities are woeful, as we see all too frequently. This is exacerbated when they are acting under directives from their masters and do not seem able to apply a bit of common sense.
