Players released

Shame Steve Perkins didn't accept Steve Bateman's management offer.Think he would have been an asset on that front.

Disappointed to see him leave,as he is a top bloke on and off the pitch.

Also Ben Abbey and Steve Sinclair have served Slough well. I believe all three players can still do a very reasonable job for other clubs in our league,if signed up.Despite their age. Some team will get a bargain.

However,Steve Bateman has made three noteworthy signings in Ryan O'Toole, Kyle Anthony and Joe Chandiram. Let's hope these will be as successful, as the three veterans leaving.

Agree that Ben Abbey can do a job at another club, not so sure about Sincy unless he decides to knuckle down and get serious about playing again, which I doubt.

After Sinclair's antics last season I'm surprised we gave him another chance. Like RR says if he decides to get his attitude right he can be a good player for someone. Ben will always do a job as he always gives 100%.

My feeling is that we could have made more of all three, if we had been less predictable in our formation choices.

To me,Steve Perkins could have easily played in front of our back three,as our holding/defensive midfielder, similar to the role Danny Bailey played for us in the Conference. He needn't have done loads of running,as we could have used him staying in our own half.He is a good passer of a ball, intelligent; knowing when to tackle or not, and has an excellent footballing brain.

Ben Abbey still has goals in him and is fit for his age.He is unfortunate, given Burnell and Smith are playing superbly but we're going to have the same problem with Ryan O'Toole in how we are going to play him. Why we can't play three forwards in some games,I don't know?

I'm amazed we haven't tried playing a man in the 'hole' behind the front two. We have a number of players who could easily play this role and be the link from midfield to attack.Steve Sinclair is one of them.He scores goals and has the ability to go past a player wih his dribbling skills. To my mind, he isn't a wing back or is he good at tracking back and I think a lot of his ill-discipline came from him being asked to play too deep, where this clearly doesn't suit his method.

This season,we've played some delightful football in a large percentage of games but I still feel that we lack a few different ideas to put us above the rest of the teams.I do think our team is better balanced this season to the last and it fit's better to Steve Bateman's chosen ways of playing.

Yet I still feel, that for the squads we've had over his reign, we don't quite get enough out of them, given the choice we have at our disposal.

However,it can't be easy pleasing everyone [including me! lol !] and often us fans don't know all the facts,as to why certain players play and certain players don't [injuries, squabbles, tactics, etc].

And Rome wasn't built in a day...............

Excellent post 3spirit, shows you how strong the squads we have had have been. I can see both sides. I like the mantra of never changing a winning team and Liverpool once famously won the title having used only 14 players in a 42 game season. I also think you should always pick your best available side therefore believing that your options from the bench are "weaker" although obviously hoping they could make an impact.

Clearly we are losing the likes of sonner due to lack of opportunities but not sure how SB resolves that.

Good luck to the 3 released players. Ben Abbey will be missed around the place, great character who seemed to always play with a smile on his face. Thought he looked really sharpe against Uxbridge earlier in the season then got a bad tackle. Ed Smith came in and really took his chance.

Interesting thoughts from 3spirit and Martin.

I’ve recently been a bit concerned that the squad is getting too big but then I remember the playoff semi with Beaconsfield last year when we were down to bare bones. With Swifty getting stretchered off in that game and Coyne limping at the end, had we got to the final I’m pretty certain Bedworth would have wiped the floor with us. I always felt Batement made a big mistake not replacing Adam Martin and Chris Seeby last year so he may have learnt a lesson there.

Problem we have is keeping everyone fit and happy – especially with games getting called off left right and centre. Whilst I’m all for experimentation 3spirit, were Steve to say make 8 changes last weekend against Woodford and they ended up sneaking a draw, there would be a dozen people on here 5 minutes after the final whistle demanding his head! We absolutely have to keep winning matches to keep up with the league leaders. To that end, I suppose you are going to play it safe with your best team. I sometimes wonder though if we are caught between playing our best team or our best 11 players.

It bothers me a bit the way the reserves have worked out. I think we have all said at some point during the last few seasons that we need a reserve team to help get/keep first teamers match fit and sharp but it seems it is just being used as an extension to the under 18s or whatever. I wouldn’t mind so much if those players were going on to the first team, but it’s more likely they will end up turning out for AFC Hayes against us in a few years!

I think we need to give the reserves some time to find their feet - it's their first season after all and a lot of the players are very young. I'm sure over time the reserves will integrate more closely with the first team and become the extension to the main squad that we all perceived to be the way forward. There's some really great things happening down at Farnham Park what with the reserves and at the other end of the scale youngsters doing Saturday morning training. Mark Betts has done a great job.

I certainly wasn’t criticising Mark Betts or anyone involved in the youth or reserves set up, they are doing a fantastic job.

I just don’t think it would hurt for some of the first team to turn out for them every now and then if they are not getting game time. It would also surely benefit some of the younger players to play and train alongside more experienced players from a higher level.

Talking of the reserves, just saw this on BBC News:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-21047014

"Two football players needed surgery for broken jaws after a fight broke out on the pitch during a reserve game.

The fracas erupted at the end of a match between Easington Sports and Slough Town at Farnham Park Playing Fields in Slough on Saturday.

Four players from Banbury-based Easington were taken to Wexham Park Hospital following the game.

Two later required operations to reset fractured jaws and have metal plates added."

I agree, Stuntman Mark, that you shouldn't make drastic changes to a team on the roll of winning but I do wonder why we don't have faith in certain players. All of them are capable of playing at this level, some of course can play higher.

Take Stuart Swift, for example, I think he's been exceptional for us this season and deserves currently to be in our centre midfield three.I think he is incredibly unlucky to be dropped for Adam Martin, bearing in mind that Adam is only a short-term fix.

I also think we under use Adam Logie and regularly fail to get the best from him,as he never get's a run of games.

I think we under-value how good he is.We have never tried to play him in a more advanced position. The man is an excellent striker of the ball and knows how to put the ball in the net but whenever he get's an opportunity to play, Steve Bateman has a fixation that Logie mustn't attack and that he must be used defensively. However,he never tells Ollie Burgess or Adam Martin to defend. Why is this?

Our squad is there to cover for injuries and to try and give us the best dynamics to win games and to win well.I believe in the squad we currently have and think we can make the 'play-offs'.

Is that good enough, though, considering the options we have?

With respect Dan I'm not sure posting one-sided BBC reports of Saturday's events is very helpful.

The club will have seen this, and the local press articles, and I presume then are in the very near process of issuing a statement via the website regarding their version of events then as there is no counter argument at the moment on something which reflects extremely poorly on the club in its current standing.

The club is obviously very aware of the recent publicity and is carrying out its own investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred during the Reserve team fixture on Saturday and resulted in dismissals for both sides with players from both sides requiring medical attention. It is unfortunate and the Club wishes all those injured a speedy recovery. As the investigation is ongoing it is not appropriate for the Club to comment any further at this stage.

The Club would respectfully ask supporters to avoid speculation on this forum with regard to these events until the full facts are known.

On behalf of Slough Town FC
