GAMES OFF 12th

Gents,

First up if a match is p-p then officials get 1/2 their fee.

Hmrc do not look at refs at our level wish were was earning enough money for us to be...I for one do not do do it for the money.....!

Take my last match at eversley....I left my house at 1130 drove for over an hour to get to the ground just before one...refereed then after a quick drink headed home got in at 7 for £41 less petrol so say I cleared £20. For over 7 hours door to door...I would like to think as a cabbie I would earn more than £3 ph....

Do you really think a ref would call a game off unless he had too? I had to call off Farleigh rovers over Xmas....I was gutted as I usually only get one middle a month on the ccl so hated missing out...95% of the pitch was fine but there were 3 spots where your foot would sink to your ankle so rather than risk a serious injury I had to call the game off...I do not think any ref would call a game off unless they really had too.....

I hope Guernsey put in a claim for expenses against the ref today. I've spoken to officials who were there and they say the game should have been played. Here's a photo.

Wow, that looks better than some pitches where games HAVE been played today. I'm guessing refs aren't supposed to take into account the distance a club has travelled or the logistics of it all but that is astonishing that he didn't even try to play the game. Why not start and see how it goes?

Unfortunately Bob there are some that are too easily leaned against to call a game off. I would say a minority but there are some.

If refs had any morals they've volunteer the information. It's not down to HMRC to chase you up. I have a second job which is cash in hand. I declare my income and expenses from that to HMRC. You may think that's foolish but there you go. It's an anecdote but our treasurer has said he's only once had to write out a receipt for an official who wanted it so he could put it through his books.

Only one a month? Considering you are one of the better refs I've seen in the CCL, that's disappointing.

Thanks mate

Unless i am really lucky I might get two but these are few and far between...Stuart has a lot of referee's on the list so one a month is the norm...my last game was November 3rd... :(

HMRC looked into this I believe and once they did all the sums realised that it was not worth it....think about it.

Say 40 games a season....fee of £30-£40 going on the upper limit of £40 that is £1600 a season

For example....

I have two kits per season £150

Tracksuit £50

Referee Jacket £50

Assistant Flags from £30-£470!

2 pairs of Boots £100

Under amour £100

Whistles and other equipment £50

Bag £30

Travel say average of £10 per match.....£400

Energy Drink £40 per season

As you may be aware when filling in a tax return you can claim for lots of extras as well....so

Suit £100....

Shoes £50

Depreciation of vehicle £Take your pick£

Need a phone to receive calls and ring assistants etc ....say £100

As a referee you buy your assistants a drink after the game as standard average pint say £3....thats another £240...

Also need a computer for emails directions match reporting etc oh and electricity to use such computer

and probably a lot more than I have listed could be claimed....

So yup I think you are right....I will put my claim into HMRC and look forward to getting my tax return

Doubt it would have made any difference, Guernsey flight took off at 7am.

7am - so HKP I would assume that Guernsey FC had already arrived at Egham before the pitch inspection took place ? If so, didn't the Guernsey FC management check out the pitch themselves ?

They were on their way to the ground when news came through. They went to see another match instead. The players went to see a League 2 match as they knew of the the players (he's from the other island)

Funny how the 2nd most maligned pitch in the CCL was playable today yet many others were not.

Not sure if this was a 'dig' at us, or not, Kroons.

I arrived at the ground later than usual, (around 2pm), and was pleased to discover that the referee had passed Meadowbank playable, with the proviso he would abandon the game if it proved to be too dangerous. Surprising, as I have known other referees call a game off there when the pitch had been in a drier state.

The pitch managed to stay playable for the whole match, but looked in rather a sorry state by the end !

One thing I would like to point out at our time at Godalming, is the way that they deal with areas of standing water. They have two sponge rollers, similar to that used on cricket pitches. The sponges collect the surface water which is subsequently squeezed out off the pitch. It is an excellent system and by the time we arrived at the ground yesterday, Godalming officials had already used the rollers to clear the two areas of water. When we move to our own ground it will definitely be something that we invest in. Are there any other CCL clubs that have anything else other than the trusty fork method to remove surface water.

Not a dig JR. Dorking is normally one of the first to go and if your pitch is playable I cant beleive others were not. Not a dig more an observation :)

Of course, an added advantage to us, is that there is no 'ground-share' there this season.

Only Under 18's occasionaly mid-week, and Ladies on approximately two Sundays out of six.

ITK, Good equipment if you have good grass cover but if you have standing water on any bare patches they just skid and don't collect unless of course they've improved the machines since we had one about ten years ago ?

Big JR, looking at the amount of games off yesterday it would seem the rain was torrential in some places and not so bad in others so you may have been one of the lucky ones [as were we !].

As far as inspections go I'm afraid it's a case of 'Damned if you do, damned if you don't' where referees are concerned. Nobody wants to call games off for the sake of it so it's a judgement call by someone who WILL be held accountable if someone gets badly injured ! What doesn't help refs though is the people who get at them while they're trying to make an honest decision. We've probably all witnessed managers/club officials trying to get games on or off to suit and I believe the only person who should be on the pitch when the referee is inspecting is the groundsman who can answer specific questions such as how well does the pitch drain or will that area in the shade thaw out by kick off time !

Must say that when I got up yesterday, it looked damp outside but there were no puddles at all leading me to believe we didn't have the heavy rain others did. Also I notice Dorking Wanderers home game went ahead yesterday.
