East Thurrock United vs Enfield Town

First, the positives:-

I thought we battled well on Saturday, particularly in the second half. Our players gave their all on what was a difficult and heavy pitch.

Encouraging to see Liam Hope and Scott McGleish linking up together – both hit the woodwork and, on another day, could have had goals.

Couldn’t have asked anymore from Mark Kirby in the leadership stakes in the second half – he really did try to drive the team on and was very vocal.

Joe O’Brien worked particularly hard on his return to the team after injury.

Now, the not so positives:-

Quality was severely lacking – I guess the heavier pitches at this time of year are making passing football difficult.

Couldn’t fathom the formation we were trying to play – rather than our usual 4-3-3, Liam and Scott both played up top. I like this set up but, if we’re going to play this way sometimes, the midfield needed to be much more compact. Tyler Campbell and Jonathan Hunt were playing too far forward – as if they were the wide players in a 4-3-3 – but this left us overrun in midfield.

I expect Adam Wallace might have needed a rest – but playing 2 up front means Adam and Tyler are going to have to play different roles to those to which they’re most suited. We missed the drive of Adam before he came on as a late sub.

Where was Dean Pennant? When the subs were brought on, we ended with our top goalscorer playing in Centre Midfield?

Defending – no better than in previous matches. We’ve got to mark better and pick up the runners from midfield. 2nd half was a little better – a clean sheet for that half! – but East Thurrock were wasteful.

I know we're at the back end of a heavy period where some clubs have not played as many games but our players look to be lacking in fitness and stamina. Time for a revamp on the conditioning front?

In truth, we were beaten by a better, more organised side – a worry when you look at their league position before that game.

Tomorrow’s game at Carshalton and Saturday’s home game against Hastings are crucial – but this league is so close that the good thing is if we can start picking up some points we could move up the table quickly. At the moment that’s looking a big if....
