Do attendances govern league position?

cup of tea

Recommended Posts

It's been highlighted to us by certain parties on the odd occasion about our attendances. I was just wondering however if that completely governs what your league position would be.

Obviously, the more financial clout you have the better the chances of doing well are, but it all depends on what other revenue streams you have available and how good the players and coaching staff are as well I reckon.

If I can use an example from the Premier League - West Brom are currently in 7th position with 33 points and average home attendances of just over 28,000, Newcastle however are in 15th place in the league with 20 points and attendances of over 52,000.

Last season Lowestoft had higher home attendances than both ourselves and Billericay, yet it was the both of us that got promoted.

The stats given for Hornchurch are wrong - as at 1/1/2013 the league average is 330 and the highest is 515.

Average HOME league attendances are as follows -

1987-88 - 91

I have no more complete seasons until 2000

2000-01 - 66

2001-02 - 91

2002-03 - 279

2003-04 - 547

2004-05 - 631

2005-06 - 400

2006-07 - 427

2007-08 - 456

2008-09 - 330

2009-10 - 271

2010-11 - 268

2011-12 - 301

2012-13 (to date) - 330

Bit of homework for you Simon, can you compile a BSS league based on purely home attendance figures, ie best supported team at no. 1 etc

>>> Surely the relevant league would hold that information

Doubtful - there are no archived records on the internet for the Isthmian Lge. Peter Butcher is going to check, but is not too hopeful.

They were available at the time - and the 1987-88 season stats appeared in a book about football in Hertfordshire - but Isthmian attendances were rarely published prior to 2000-01.The local papers never published them either. Fred has some of the Herts books and he is going to check them.I will also check the non lge directory books which were published but I don't think they listed the attendances for the lower divisions of the Isthmian Leg.

UPDATED

1987-88 - 91

1990-91 - 78

1991-92 - 67

1992-93 - 96 - this was an unusual season, as four matches were played at Tilbury due to flooding at The Bridge, which meant that the ground could not be used for several weeks, and of course it also includes the home match against Aldershot (585), to compensate slightly for the lower attendances at Tilbury (average of 32)

2000-01 - 66

2001-02 - 91

2002-03 - 279

2003-04 - 547

2004-05 - 631

2005-06 - 400

2006-07 - 427

2007-08 - 456

2008-09 - 330

2009-10 - 271

2010-11 - 268

2011-12 - 301

2012-13 (to date) - 330

I got the extra seasons from the Non League Directory, which unfortunately does not have attendances for any other earlier seasons, and I do not have the books for the later seasons.

Fred is checking another two sources for the missing attendances, but unless they are quoted in one of the end-of-season programmes, then I doubt if we can get them.

Heard a few horror stories about Aldershot fans when they were in the old isthmian division 3 going to grounds and pretty much running amok.
