OldTowner
Following todays match v Bury, which was another 2 - 3 loss we find ourselves down to 19th in the League with the worst defensive record of 46 against from 19 games and just 2 points ahead of Thurrock in 21st place ( relegation spot ) who have 3 games in hand over Town. We have conceeded 3 or more goals in 14 of our games this season, including a run of 3 against in 10 from our last 12 games. Not impressive. December we picked up 1 point from 15 - in a 1 - 1 home stalemate with Thurrock. In todays game v Bury why, at 1 - 1 was Johnston used as Sub when we needed a goal to try and win. Why was Liam Hope, our top goal scorer and 8th top in the league goal charts, left out ? What is the issue with SN and Liam ? Why was Mark Henry not involved - he has over 100 Premier level games under his belt and was brought in due to his "experience" at this level. Experience of playing I assume ?. Why does Jay Siva not get a chance to have a go at wiery defenders in the final 20 mins of a game. What is the issue with SN and Jay ? May only be the 1st of January, but almost half of the season has gone and we have slid down week after week result after result. Yes it is a stronger league than we have played in before, but I recall SN stating that 14 games in and he would know what to do. Playing the Ian Holloway style ( his quote not mine ) does not appear to be working. With 23 league games to go their may well be time, but on the current ratio of say 1 point per game we will gain 41 points which may or may not be enough to avoid Ryman North football in 2013/2014. After so much work all round the Club to get us where we are, we all want to stay there !!!!! Be interesting to hear other views, some with answers I hope. CD Towner
Agree with all of the above and let's be honest the Ian Holloway way is hardly attacking football at its best anyway! SN certainly has his favourites and the above appear not to be them! How 2 or 3 repeatedly play week in week out baffles me! Siva and Hope clearly not fancied by SN. Bruce Darnell
The defensive statistics quoted above by Old Towner are frightening. No team can expect to survive if they are conceding 3 goals in 10 games out of 12. As I am back in Australia, I haven't seen those 12 games but the signs were there before I left. I saw a 2 goal lead thrown away against East Thurrock and three goals shipped again four days later against Cray, both home games. Then, it appeared to me that the problem was largely in midfield - we had no one playing as a true holding midfielder. The motto seemed to bomb forward at every opportunity, but we were then caught out on the break. Signing a new forward seems very much in keeping with the above attacking philosophy, but as I said in an earlier post, however good the forwards are they cannot keep overcoming a torrent of goals shipped at the back. I saw Scott McLeish play at Barnet last year and he is a good player with experience at a much higher level. I assume he doesn't come cheap. There has been some discussion on this site about whether the club has the budget to fix the problems. This latest signing would suggest to me that it does, but why is there so much apparent unwillingness to fix the midfield and defence? Neither of my teams, Town and Arsenal, know how to defend and neither seems to know how to close a game out when in the lead. It's getting frustrating but both teams still have my full support. Let's hope we see some improvement.

Enfield United
I'm not gonna make excuses for the club or manager/coaches but my staright opinion is: In December we lost not only games but Michael Ewang/Dean Pennant and Joe O'Brien. Could we have done with them yesterday=Yes of course. Bardle and Allen played along with Hunt in Central midfield and no matter what anyone says, for 83 minutes we gave as good as we got=Not good enough as the game is 90 minutes long. So it's certainly an area which needs consideration. Defensively we have struggled to defend at this level, we have good players very able players, however, mistakes are getting ruthlessly punished. Goals conceded stats can no longer be ignored, it dose'nt matter if they are conceded in the 90th min or 1st minute they are goals against and we must have greater pride in not conceding any goals. Upfront we've signed Mcgleish, i'm all for this as it is an improvement on any of our other strikers, he not only has the pedigree/experienced but he ran more, jumped higher and showed greater desire than anyone else. It'll be nice to get a Pennant/O'Brien partnership back in central midfield, we need to add a strong and quick defender or two at the back (I think their is one about to make a debut soon) and mcgleish is welcomed with open arms in my view. So there are players returning from injury very soon and there also seem's some action is being taken in bringing in players. You can't ask more than that after 19 games. Arkwright
Perhaps using Lee White as a centre half rather than at left back would improve things, him being a centre half? I thought we had a rather good left back anyay... Only a few more results like this and I'll have to have a sale in the shop of all the Ryman Premier League merchandise, and that wouldn't make me very happy!!! thecoldend
"WE WILL HAVE SOME DIFFICULT PERIODS THIS SEASON SO WE SHOULD ENJOY THE GOOD TIMES, BUT NOT GET TOO DOWN WHEN THINGS DON'T GO AS PLANNED" - STEVE NEWING, AUGUST 2012 We have played Whitehawk, Bury, Wealdstone and Lowestoft who are among the top teams in the league along with in form Leiston in five of last six games. A tough run for any team. The next three games against ETU, CARSHALTON & HASTINGS are now ultra important. We will be alright! Just a few good results (easier said than done I know) and we'll rise up the table. Look at Leiston winning 4 and drawing 2. Tom S
Surely those were reactive actions. Proactive would be dealing with a problem that hasn't arisen yet. Who's likely to get injured next month? Apart from Phil Kane, obviously (sorry, Phil).
thecoldend
OT I get why your frustrated and the performances haven't been brilliant but thats all I can say. As stated the new three games are important ones where I'm sure we'll pick up points. I hope so anyway. McGleish is a great sigining that needs no introduction... along with O'Cealiull (sorry if spelt it wrong) who is a local lad who has played at a higher level....Haringey manager Tom Loizou said it would be difficult to keep hold of him when he signed in the summer at Coles Park. Two decent signings by looks of it. Sure there maybe one or two other new faces in the pipeline.... not sure what other answers the board or management can give? How about recruiting a rich local business man (say an estate agent perhaps) onto the board to then be appointed chairman? He could sell the ground and move us to a new development further North on the A10 maybe... opening a 'supporter's link cafe' nearby. Would that be more pro-active? CD Towner
Lets not forget that SN is inexperienced at this level. He has never managed at the level before and is clearly still learning whilst making some mistakes. To give him credit, he's always open to speaking to the supporters in the bar and at meetings, that unfortunately doesnt guarentee points though i'm afraid. The quote by Steve in August 2012 has proven correct. He is working on a small budget or better still a smaller budget than the mojority of RP Clubs. He has given the current 'promotion' players the opportunity to succeed and they have done their best. Steve and the board are now acting and very timely too. Remember the target this year was consolidation. As a club we are still discovering our new overheads at the stadium and to go gunho with mega signings is something that is irresponsible and not acceptable by the supporters who have spilt blood to have us housed in our own home in our borough once again. Steve's doing a great job and his signings will improve the starting X1. The board know what they are doing and are acting accordingly, everyone needs to remember in the long run our aim will be promotion, but we need to walk into that position not like Whitehawk who are sprinting their with unfounded income which will all go belly up one day as did Truro City and Greta in Scotland plus many other club's to mention. I for one am relaxed that our club is moving along well, we are progressive and all within budget. Come on Towners, we are expecting some points over the next 3-4 games. Agree with the view on McGleish ( as my other post ) Thought he did well in his first game. Still have concerns regarding "defending" in midfield and playing 3 against 4 ( as my opening post ). We will all see on Saturday and Tuesday if things are on the up. Let's hope they are.

AnfieldTowner
Like that, Tom, let's hope so! Scott is clearly a quality striker used to a much higher level and, whilst he's not getting any younger, he showed yesterday that he's still got the desire to compete at this level. Looks a good signing to me, as long as he's not breaking the bank.... The central defender that Steve's just brought in also comes with good credentials at a higher level - these additions are very welcome at a time when we're struggling for points. Looking for them, along with the likes of Jonathan Hunt and Mark Kirby, to inspire some of the younger players. Still think Liam Hope's got a significant role to play too even with the signing of Scott McGleish. Now would be a good time to get some more points on the board Towners! Need to tighten up at the back for the crucial visit to East Thurrock on Saturday. Do agree with others though that that's not just the job of the defenders - central midfield has a big role to play. OldTowner
Where was Dean Pennant on Saturday - reading prog, expected him in squad ?
CD Towner
Agreed i think Pennant would be a better option than both Bardle and Allen at the moment. Not as mobile but certainly a physical presence. Agree regarding Hope but as he was an unused sub on Tuesday, it would suggest SN may think otherwise. Alongside McGleish though, might give us enough goals to stay up.
