Rearranged Fixtures for the coming week,Many Clubs will face Financial Meltdown, the Refs will be phoning the Samaritans, due to their loss of Earnings. The only £'s they will get is round their Waistlines. Not many games the week after also, still we do have Murrells Musings to tide us over the NEW YEAR.

It has not been the League's policy to schedule matches for New Year's Day for many years, if ever. Indeed prior to the advent of the FA Standard rules, it was a league rule that no matches would be staged on New Year's Day unless it fell on a Saturday.

I do not look to arrange too many midweek games at the beginning of January because the weather is invariably poor, with the resulting postponements.

Perhaps we'll have a full programme on New Year's Day next season and see if it is a popular move. Any views?

I think it could be a question to seriously ask the clubs. Especially with how the weather has been over the last few years. Every date needs to be looked at or dare I say it the league needs to reduce the number of teams.

I say people have lives, most players are aged between 18-30 and I be surprised if they stayed in Nye to play football the next day. Get a life

I wasn't so much thinking of games on New Year's Day, but there was maybe the possibility to hastily arrange one or two local games for Wednesday night (although today's weather may have scuppered it anyway). Having said that, there's a full Ryman and Southern League programme tomorrow so those seeking promotion had better get used to the idea!

we always played New Years day in this league for some reason it was an 11.00am kick off and it was also a local derby, we(Ash) were often pitted against Farnham and in those days you would always get a massive crowd, everybody was given the chance to go out and party or play I always chose to play so would stay in or go out for a couple of hours and not drink alcohol,

Cant see a New Years Day fixture being popular. Chertsey v Chalfont St Peter: This will be the first time ive ever missed a New Years lunch with my family and it has not gone down too well. I tried months ago to change the fixture time or date with Chalfont but they were unwilling to change. Fortunately im only missing one player which just shows how important football can be to some people.

I would love to think that the public will turn up in their droves on New Years day but I just cant see it. I can understand the pro's playing on this day but I just cant see the point in our level doing it.

Life's tough when you go up a level JJ :)

Won't make you name the player! Notice you had Steve Duff on the bench the other day, back for the holidays?

I agree Krooner

We may always get bad weather at this time of year, but we seem to get more postponements. It seems to require less to call a game off these days. Well done to Camberley by the way for getting two games on over the break.

Now, if elf and safety is the reason (as I suspect) for some of these postponements, then it's something we may have to live with, but a new year fixture is popular with floating visitors too, especially as a morning k.o. can attract a decent crowd. The Sussex League played matches on Saturday 24th December last season and a Div 3 team, Roffey got about 400 there. It is therefore worth a try on an unusual day, even if, as lazarus suggests, the weather may have the final say more often than not. It's also one less Tuesday / Thursday night in March / April which will happen if we get any more bad weather.

I fully understand the players being reluctant to play, but it's all about professionalism. This is not park pitch football, although this level may have been some twenty years ago, but the standards are improving and commercial opportunities need to be taken advantage of. We certainly would look for a fixture if we had our own facilities and frequently used to play then back when we were in the Ryman League. Some clubs have benefitted from Friday night matches too and I applaud their efforts.

There is only one other alternative otherwise, which is to reduce all leagues at Step 5 or below to 20 clubs. We can't realistically start any earlier and we can't finish any later. I doubt that would be a popular move either, but as Krooner said, we need to present that to the clubs along with the pros and cons and let them decide.

By all means have a fixture on january 1st but make them 3pm kick-offs so if we are suffering from proper Winter weather ie frosts, you then still have a chance of getting a game on whereas 11/11.30 starts don't give the grounds any time to thaw out !

Don't forget also that club staff are preparing for games 3 or 4 hours before kick off, would you want to be at the ground at 7am on New Years Day ?

Finally, it has been exceptionally wet and therefore lots of postponements but don't forget we started on August 4th and could theoretically go to May 3rd if required so it's unfortunate but not drastic at the moment in terms of catching up although, as always, the most successful teams will be the ones to suffer but that's the price of good cup runs I'm afraid.

My only other suggestion would be to limit the amount of cups a club can enter ie FA Cup, FA Vase, One County Cup and the League Cup as there seem to be a number of teams playing in more than one County Cup and several playing Invitation-type cup competitions as well !

yes mate until 10th Jan. Shame we've had so many games called off. Good news is that he is back for good in April.

Just in time for the end of the season!

With it hammering down out there today, I feel you may get to have your family lunch tomorrow after all.....

Can't see the FA agreeing to that. In fact, Step 5 leagues look as if they will all be a minimum of 22 sides in the future.

That is certainly the plan.

I am confident Chertsey v Chalfont will go ahead as planned. The pitch was fine yesterday and now that it has stopped raining, it has 20 hours to dry up.
