theoldman
I normally grab a Margate FC programme as I head to the loo for a 'session' (for reading purposes, I hasten to add!) and was surprised by some of the goal scoring stats, especially for the front two, but also for our group of highest scorers. They are as follows: Murphy and Whitnell - paired to start 9 times, 1 goal(Murphy 1st Sept) Rook and Whitnell - paired to start 9 times, 8 goals (5 Whitnell, 3 Rook) Whitnell (5 goals from 21 starts) has only ever scored when Rook starts Murphy (4 goals from 20 starts) has only ever scored when Rook starts Rook (5 goals from 13 starts) has only ever scored when Whitnell starts Long (6 goals from 13 starts) has only ever scored when Rook starts Stubbs (6 goals from 18 starts inc pens) doesn't seem to care who starts up front! There was also a noticeable contribution from substitutes of 9 goals so far this season. Plus, the current midfield of Stubbs, Avery, Bodkin and Corneille have contributed an impressive 16 goals so far. Sadly, defenders have only scored 2 goals, meaning maybe our set pieces need to be improved? Personally, I much prefer the 'balanced' midfield we have now in our 4-4-2 system, with Rook and Whitnell up front, but you have to admit Sam Long's stats are pretty good. But, whoevers on the bench, they are all good enough to start at some time.In other words, a small, but very good squad. I know, I've got too much time on my hands!! Coffin Ender
Interesting stuff, oldman, but I'm wondering of the partnership stats how many of those goals were accounted for in matches against lower grade oppo in the cups? I think a 'league-only' analysis is called for...back to the toilet! Agree about the comments on subs though. Our bench is noticeably stronger than in recent years.
