The three nil scoreline gives the impression that Welling deserved their win – yes, they did, but they achieved it thanks to some extremely controversial decisions which went against the home side. It started in the fourth minute when Frankie Curley was booked for a tackle which was to prove to be no worst than any other tackle during the match. But when Tambeson Eyong was brought down in the 13th minute, the anticipated free kick never happened – instead Tam, who has never been known to dive, was booked for diving. When Loui Fazakerley was booked two minutes later for a similar incident, it was beginning to look like we were in for a whistle happy afternoon. Earlier, Frankie Curley was bowled over and from the free kick, Lewis Smith crashed the ball into the wall, where it rebounded to Wayne Gray, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Andy Tomlinson took the kick and Sam Mott punched the ball away. Eyong then slipped the ball ahead of Gray, who was foiled by Mott who quickly came out of his goal to dive on the ball. Then came the moment which turned the match decisively Welling’s way - Lewis Smith stormed in from the left wing and was brought down – a penalty? Or did the defender play the ball out for a corner? – But what did we get? – a booking for Lewis for diving. This decision was to have far reaching consequences. Until then Welling had offered little up front, but their defence was sound, and it was from a long clearance up the field which led to the opening goal. The ball was played forward and Duran Reynolds made a hash of clearing the ball, instead nodding it into the path of a Welling forward who in turn prodded it forward to KIERNAN HUGHES-MASON, who placed the ball into the net. No one was over-concerned as he was offside, but the goal was given, much to the delight of the handful of away supporters on the river side of the ground. There was little of note to the rest of the first half until one minute from the interval, when Lewis Smith was booked for a mistimed tackle, and, as he had already been controversially booked earlier on, the yellow card was immediately followed by a red. A goal down, a player down, what more could happen? We found out immediately the teams took the field for the second half – Elliot Styles was unable to continue, and he was replaced by Rimmel Daniel, who is not a central defender and who took up a position on the left side of the defence. Hughes-Mason hit a shot wide, following a corner, and at the other end a free kick by Andy Tomlinson was headed back by Reynolds to Daniel, whose shot was directed too high to trouble keeper Mott. And when Wayne Gray crossed the ball into the middle, it was Daniel again to fire in the shot, the ball going wide of the post. Welling went further ahead when KIERNAN HUGHES-MASON was allowed to run through, past four defenders, unchallenged, before perhaps too easily gliding past Duran Reynolds and slotting the ball into the net. A corner from Fazakerley was cleared by Reiss Noel, and Joey May replaced Andy Tomlinson. Leon McKenzie went close with a shot from Tambeson Eyong had created the opening, and then Martin Tuohy came on for Wayne Gray. Keeper Mott was somewhat fortunate when he grabbed a shot from Alex Bentley at the second attempt on the goal line, and Welling went three up when a centre from the left was missed by Reynolds, leaving LOUI FAZAKERLEY a free header. Rimmel Daniel fired over, after Mott had dropped a centre from the right, and Welling then forced two corners in succession, both taken by Joe Healy, before another moment of controversy followed at the other end, when Reynolds challenged for the ball, and Mott appeared to retaliate. It appeared a clear cut penalty, with perhaps a card (yellow or red, referee’s privilege, for Mott) – instead the referee belatedly awarded a free kick to Welling, and took no other action. There was still time for Joey May to float over a corner, but the three points were already heading over the Dartford Bridge.
andydick
Welling's version of events. Another good report and one which confirms that the only person in the ground who believed Lewis dived (from which he was booked) was the referee ... http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/wellingutd/s/match-report-41548.html?official=1&fixture_id=518831
cup of tea
Good report. Ref got that one wrong and that decision ended up costing us an equal 11 v 11 game (no complaints about the second yellow for Lewis).
cup of tea
Even their forum reckons that Lewis was stitched up. http://wellingunited...v-wings-thread/ Can the club put in an appeal for the first yellow card? Don't know the rules on that one.

Barry Proudfoot
Think the YouTube clips shows the ref got it spot on. no contact there whatsoever. He dives every single game, Lewis smith is the Luiz Suarez of non league football
Eastside Urchin
OMG I thought he dived, shocking decision but once you have been booked for it not hn go taming into a fckng tackle you don't need to make. Going to be unpopular here but cheating is an act of a [****!!****],I hate it,deplore it and moment any referee that tries to stamp down on it,it is dirty, horrible and wrong and if it means we lose players then so be it. Lewis was robbed of a penalty, sent off wongly(sort of) but please do not make hat stupid fckng tackle,no one else's falt
Eastside Urchin
This decision bugs me,he didn't go mad like he does when bought own,it looks a stonewall pen for me but at the same time here's something telling me otherwise, not sure why,I just think the ref my be right, although it looks different
cup of tea
The defender clearly gets the ball, no problem there. I wasn't sure if the No 8 caught him or not. Oh well, Lewis got booked and we move on. Like to see the Tam one again as he was through and there wasn't any benefit for him to go down. Their guy too, was that a dive? Ref was a tad pedantic to say the least. Diving in general - Not keen, unfortunately I would say people from most clubs does it - Look at Bury last season, Half their team went down as soon as they felt an opponent's breath on them, and there's a certain player from Concord who I think must have gone to RADA as some point and I know he was a Hornchurch player but Joe Flack did tend to fall over quite easily (he did for Billericay as well). cup of tea
They are a good side, very well organised. Always going to be a difficult game for us.
colin mcbride
looked at the slow mo 4 times still unsure what i think ,cant see it warrants a booking ,especially in the speed of a game .we all are blinkered but i have never seen tam dive.franks was a booking but they had many simalar tackles in the first go unpunished.we gifted them a goal uphill after that but the lads didnt throw it in .welling are a good side .we are at the halfway stage and our results will be improved in the second half of the season ,couple additions and we will be ok
Hornchurch "O"
I'm available. Striker. Can use both feet. On the subject of Diving. Surely it's only a dive if the player appeals for the foul. Seen a few people get touched, go to ground and get booked, but didn't appeal for anything.
