Acadamies at Non League Level.

I agree entirely with AllStar.

Academies, if well run and maintained, can help produce some cracking players - one or two of whom might go onto captain their country.

One of the best academies is Wallsend Boys Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallsend_Boys_Club) who have turned out a lot of major talent over the years.

I personally wish that central government would divert more money into helping fund academies via the Football Foundation and Sport England. At a time when the number of players being placed on the football scrap-heap is at its highest in years, we urgently need more ways of keeping players in football. Not only does it help keep them fit and give them a purpose, but it also helps keep them out of trouble and away from bad influences.

More clubs, more academies and more players in the game is my footballing wish for 2013.

I wouldn't wish too much for more academies, in and around here we have enough l. I'd just wish for a better set-up and better coaching to the youngsters that have already been 'selected to have potential'

Like I said Carshalton took/take on 25 players a season and I think maybe 7 have played for the 1st team out of 50 in the past two years. So some good can come out of them but then they have a good 'coach' in Ian Hazel.

2/7 have also had approaches from Luton Town and Sheffield United so professional clubs clearly see something in the system

All played 1st team for Dulwich Hamlet, Walton Casuals and Leatherhead. I don't really see your point in perusing this though Duncs? Take someone's word for once.

Academies can be worthwhile just depends on the club, how it's organised and who's managing the kids.

I'm not pursuing it AS but you faiedl to convince me, once money was mentioned i knew there had to be an alterier motive behind these acadamies, just talking from the experiences I have had so don't get stroppy, who is your team and what is your position are you a player or part of the management or are you an exacadamie reject ?

Well wouldnt you like to know Duncs, plus if I was an academy reject I wouldn't be be defending the system would I?

well you have said nothing to convince me so my opinion is still the same and as for your mate The Mayor Guy he needs a presonallity transplant lol

Yeah Nathan played in that game against Frimley but as did Lewis Jackson another Walton 1st team player.

In terms about taking about Mayor, that's got nothing to do with me. If you must know I'm a former player with cafc so it's coming first hand from someone who's been there and done it and isn't an opinionated fossil like yourself.

I played for the Robins as well, you have got to stop getting stroppy we are having a good debate and you are being very childish,my cousin Myles is at Woking academy and he was at AFC Wimbledon so I have an up to date opinion on this subject.

It's not being stroppy it's just being bored. How you can have such a strong opinion on something without being involved in one is beyond me!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion don't get me wrong, that's what this is all about. But clubs don't do it for money it's to improve their 1st teams and reserves. I don't think CCL clubs would benefit from them though, Ryman clubs are the lowest in my opinion.

Of course the better players will go to the Ryman Leagues and above. You wouldn't expect one of the top UKFF lads who has played for Dinamo Bucharest to turn out for Knaphill or CB Hounslow would you?

Have Duncs and the Chubby one morphed together?

Maybe an academy is too progressive for some people who hate the dreaded CHANGE word.

Anyway... back on topic and with apologies to Smudge only that certain people (me included) took it off topic.

My last word on academies is that they will be vital in shaping the future of football at all levels. It never hurts to 'grow your own' and whilst you might get a few players who aren't up to scratch, there is always that chance that you will unearth a few gems.

Academies do more than just allow players to play football - they provide education and development and also can act as a safe haven if a player would otherwise get into trouble with the police.

As for 'oh well the players will get poached by the bigger clubs'... does that not happen with all clubs? I remember the hoo ha caused when John Bostock went to Tottenham Hotspur for a paltry amount. That is life, and the best players will always be picked off by the bigger ones. It's a case of getting a good deal for them, and also for the club. Chippenham Town, for example, lost a young player called Tyrone Mings to Ipswich Town last week but they will be compensated by a pre-season money-spinner against Ipswich Town in July 2013. Both sides have benefited from this deal, so happy days.

In Scotland, many of the junior academies have been funded through criminals having their assets seized and that money being redistributed into sports development. This is a great idea, and I hope that it catches on in England and Wales. If drug rings can be smashed nationally, think of how much of that money could be redistributed in a national sports academy building programme? That is going to be the thing which determines how good a player is developed over the next 10-20 years. Never mind the grandeur of St. George's Park (as great and as welcome as it is) it's the grass roots which will determine where the next batch of potential world beaters come from.

With a bit of foresight, backing and belief then academies can be successful.

If I didn't know better, I would honestly believe from reading your posts that you are just trying to annoy everyone Duncs. If the qualification to be a know it all is having a relation in an academy there are a hell of a lot of qualified people. Didn't your precious Sandhurst benefit from playing two Woking Academy boys a lot last season?

I am very suprised that NO ONE,on here has grasped the nettle in regards to the setting up of Academies at Non League Level, they are Nice little earners for certain individuals. As luke pointed out a grant of £3500 is given for each student per year, say in the 1st year you take on 30=£105,000,but being as it is a 16-18 scheme, and it continues into year 2,you need to enroll more, some Acadamies have 60 enrolled, run 2 sides. The person who is the so called Academy Director would not do this for nothing, would he?Say he paid himself £500 per week, that would only take £26.000 OUT OF THE POT.I speak from experience of knowing a person who has been in the Non League game for years, and never ever giving his services for FREE.Let alone ever attending a Club Function,or Match, that concerns the Parent Club.So my view is that most Academies will produce no home grown players for such Clubs, just a regular income for 1 or 2 individuals that run these Projects.
