Scoreline
Disappointing. Shall we move on? Grumble... moan... bloody football...
Steph
I started writing a damning critique however, what's the point of that. The team know that they did not perform at all yesterday and they have to improve. The next two games will decide the rest of the season. Nothing less than 2 wins will do! A draw or defeats will clearly put us in the relegation mix. However two wins will put us at the half way mark of the managers aim of 14 wins this season with only 18 games played. We drew at Imber Court in August with a fitful performance. Like the curates egg good in parts. Met Police have been in and out of form lately, lost to Leiston and heavily beaten by Concorde but beat Wingate and Finchley and yesterday beat Bury. Only a month ago beat Hasting 4-0 but Hastings may have had other things on their mind having won the FA cup 1st round the week before but we lost to Hastings on the Tuesday following the FA cup. Now Leiston struggled in the early part of the season but have been unbeaten in their last 5 games winning the last three by 1-0 margins. It is clear that they have tightened their defence. Do we have a forward line that can score against a tight defence with Tyler and Adam, both must admit, being out of form! I have doubts over Adam's fitness. He seemed knackered yesterday, not jumping and never got past the two central defenders.
Enfield United
Disappointing. Shall we move on? Grumble... moan... bloody football... Move on indeed, but with a reality check and positivity. Wealdstone are a top team at this level and having witnessed them yesterday they are Blue Square Conf South Play Off/Title level not just Ryman Prem Level. Yesterday we saw the Champions elect, without doubt in my view. 4/6 to beat us yesterday??? Their was some easy money to be made their. We can be proud of the first half performance we gave as good as we got except for the finishing and a penalty shout, just got caught out in familiar ways ina 2 minute period. We ran out of spirit and some energy in the second half, or did Wealdstone move up a gear?? probably a bit of both. As someone pointed out this is Wealdstones 8th season at step 3, their first 4 seasons saw them finish 18th, 18th, 19th and 13th under the same manager as today. I thought throwing Mark Henry into the team was like throwing him into the deep end somewhat, but Steve's signings have proved very good to date as we have no grumbles with East, White, Hunt and a couple of more games may see him settle down as a valued addition as the others. Now this Saturday is a big game for us, against Met Police the sort of game we need to pick up 1-3pts from.
Father Jack
Agreed - horrible day, sensible comments from Steph and EU, let's move on. Except......... Would a member of the management care to comment on the omission of Liam Hope from the starting line-up yesterday? Was this down to recent form (well, ONE bad game - he scored a hat-trick in his previous one!)? Was it a tactical, one-game-only, formation change? And also, why did he remain on the bench when we were chasing the game in the second half? He is among the Division's top scorers, in case you'd forgotten! Steph
"And also, why did he remain on the bench when we were chasing the game in the second half?" I was going to write the same in my critque which I did not post. It is for the manager to make these decisions and I am sure you can ask him and get a full explanation. At the moment he is on target for his stated aim. 14 wins. Let's be honest we would have settled for a draw yesterday. I am sure it is the manner of their defeat which leaves a sour taste in the mouth but for 20 odd minutes we held our own and if it wasn't for that last gasp goal 3-0 would have been par for the season so far. As scoreline states we have to move on - it is the next two games which are important. The team has to be up for it even the boxing day fixture. Steve Newing
Steve tells me that the omission of Liam was tactical , to have more presence in midfield to try to combat Wealdstone in there. He also feels that after the first ten minutes it worked as we created at least four very/good chances from breaking fast down the flanks and through Adam down the middle. After riding out the first ten minutes the 20 minute spell when we got on top , we needed to take the chances to give ourselves a chance. We then twice passed the ball to the oppo when under no pressure which led to their goals , one directly then one to the corner from where they scored their second. Third goal straight after half time effectively killed the game off. Liam was warming up to come on , but after having to bring off Jordan with injury and losing Lee from midfield whilst getting Liam ready , Steve was concerned re keeping the shape more and trying to limit chances against us down whilst still hoping to nick something on the break. Father Jack hope this helps.
Father Jack
Thank you comeon for a prompt and informative reply. Not sure I agree 100%, but at least we have an insight into Steve's thinking. Exactly what this forum is for!
CD Towner
"After riding out the first ten minutes the 20 minute spell when we got on top , we needed to take the chances to give ourselves a chance" Surely we need the relevant players on the pitch to take these chances?! Why did we play Jonathan Hunt up frint instead? The explanation is interesting and appreciated though however there was still another sub to be made? Another topic for discussion is why Jey Siva can't get a game at the moment. Michael Bardle doesn't seem to be pulling up trees. Any thoughts on the new signing?
