spen666
I watch football at lots of different levels, and have come to the conclusion the Pyramid system is not benefitting the clubs, but is actually killing the game. Its time for a rethink I've set out my thoughts here, and would be interested to hear your thoughts.
The Mayor Of Simpleton
I'm not sure it needs killing off, but it DOES need change. I am strongly in favour of a 1-2-4-8-16-32-64 pyramid down to Step 7, with the introduction of a Midland League in order to stop the current bottle-necking of clubs around the Midlands. I would also have the Conference Leagues full-time, as I feel clubs need time to make the transition from being part-time to being full-time. Also, every club would have to deposit a bond with the FA at the start of the season as insurance against them going bust. If the club doesn't go bust, it gets the deposit back, but if it does it can use that money to help stay afloat thereby not messing other teams around (in the cases of Truro and Kettering) and would not face a points deduction so long as the club would be sold on in 28 days. Also, every league from Step 3-7 I would have at 20 teams. 20 should be enough, when you consider the various Cup competitions played during a season and also the inclement weather as well! In the 60s when I started watching non league football in many ways the standard at the top end was better than the two lower leagues in the football league proper because players were better off receiving a half decent wage for playing part time and doing a full time job outside football. I really don't see the need for any club below Championship level to be full time, if they genuinely hope to have a long term sustainable future.
