Bad Language from the Dug-outs

Rother

Recommended Posts

Seems to be part and parcel of the game. But should it be? Has it always been that way?

At Windsor Keith Scott and Jim Melvin could certainly dish it out, particularly to their own players, but also the officials on occasion. Mick Woodham and his staff are completely and utterly different and frankly it is refreshing. I don't think I've heard a single swear word since they've been at the club.

I'm sure young players respond better (ok, Scott's squad were older and more experienced).

Is it necessary? Does it do any good, or is it just a release of tension that does no harm?

Who are the worst offenders?

From my experience of today's game the Sandhurst manager was one of the worst offenders I've seen so far this season, language and behaviour was terribleto match officials and own players, and the scoerline says it al reallyl.....Ash 5 v Sandhurst 2!!

I don't think I have ever heard Salv swear more than a handful of times in the2 seasons that I have helped him, what I have witthessed is his Latino passion and sometimes it gets the better of him,of course the odd swear word is said in the heat of the moment but hey it's a mans game and how did I guess the Windsor manager never swears, absolute rubbish.

No mention was made of him never swearing Duncs the quote was 'I don't think I've heard a single swear word' which I think even you would find difficult to argue against ! Having said that I have never heard Mick swear either as a player, manager or socially and I've known him for many years so it proves you can get your point across without the use of bad language.

Both passion and frustration will occasionally lead to an umprompted outburst but there are some benches who can't string a sentence together unless it includes several swear words and when you're trying to encourage families to watch games it's very hard to keep them coming back if they hear that sort of language on a regular basis.

Oh my god what game are we talking about here surely not football, swearing in football is passion ok sometimes it goes over the top but on the whole every player, manager committee member and fan has sworn.

Just thinking what next weeks topic will be "do we need officials"

There is loads of reasons weather it's passion or frustration but its because we all so badly want to win.

As long as the C word is not used I don't think swearing is a problem

I'm with you on that one bob.....AUpostie got anything you'd like to say about your manager and the C word ?

I don't have a problem with swearing per se (except when it's OTT), but the main question I was hoping would generate an intelligent discussion on the subject was whether it does any good, or might actually do harm, especially with a young team.

Going to some games is like attending a Tourette's Convention but maybe by doing things a bit differently Micky Woodham has generated a slightly more forgiving and therfore creative environment for players to express themselves without fear of being bawled out every game.

Yes it's a man's game and swearing seems to be pretty much part and parcel but im not sure it does any good whatsoever in the majority of cases particularly with young players.

Whatever, I am very impressed with our Mr Woodham.

well I think the intelligent thing to do is not ask such a stupid question and if your lads are that sensitive then they are in the wrong game, anyway I know a few of the Windsor lads personally and I wouldn't say they are particuarly gentile in any shape or form WTF are you going on about,2 of them in fact could swear for England.

the old swearing one. Yes football is a passionate game and yes swearing happens. I think what Rother was getting out is the over the top swearing.

I actually think this season I have heard less swearing than in previous seasons and I am pleased about that because most of the time there is no need for it.

What I do not like is the over the top nnsense that does go on and normally it is aimed at either the referee or the opposing team. I have heard many referees called f*cking this and f*cking that but when their own player does it that is invariably met with a call of "unlucky" So passion is ok as long as directed towards anyone but your own team ?

Duncs, the clue is in the title of the topic mate. LOL. NO MENTION OF PLAYERS SWEARING WAS THERE ?

Bobuk & Guvnor No1, I did say outbursts can be caused by passion or frustration but none of you seem to be actually reading the question Rother asked which was twofold [a] is it NECESSARY and does it motivate or demotivate ?

I can swear with the best but I try to moderate my language where women and children are present but that's the way I was brought up. Maybe I'm old fashioned in that respect but do you honestly want your wives/kids listening to it all the time ?

Good grief, did you actually read what I posted, or are you being deliberately obtuse?

I disagree here and think that it should be stopped. This is a bit weird as I have just got in from the Guernsey game vs Erith & Belevedere and I can tell you that the swearing from Erith in today's game was pretty awful and was being discussed by a lot of the Guernsey supporters around me. We get about 1000 fans at our home games and around the pitch and behind one of the goals we have loads of kids watching and enjoying a family day out only to listen to unacceptable foul language. I am sure GFC players swear, I swear and we all slip up from time to time but the outright continual shouting of swear words should be stopped. In Guernseys local leagues the referees basically have a zero tolerance of any swearing, this is often frustrating as it results in red and yellow cards all over the place but we all know where we stand and therefore have to curb the swearing. I understand the committment arguement, I understand it is a mans game and I also understand that if you visit any Premier League match that you will see familys sitting together and one of their party outrageously shouting swear words at the opposition, opposition fans and officials, in fact also at their own team if things are going badly. But just becasue it is allowed at Premier League games, just because kids probably swear more at school than they hear at football does not make it right. IMO it should be stopped if we want football to be a family day out, as it is in Guernsey
