Ive skippered all the teams ive played for an even that doesnt work with some an it is getting worse most say as skipper you can approach i do then they tell you to go away, whats the point of saying you can approach then not even acknowledging it. at windsor i was booked for doing what a referee asked me to do i still got the yellow through though for his mistake he even apologised to me after the game

Leave it out, Newby. Was definitely for mouth and deserved

HKP makes an interesting point about rugby players calling the referee sir - whilst i don't know the origins of this tradition one could presume that it is out of respect for the position, and not necessarily the person fulfilling the role. Call me old-fashioned but it seems to be an issue in society in general whereby those in positions of authority / responsibility (for instance, school-teachers, police officers, etc) do not receive the respect their positions, in my opinion, deserve. Note I say positions - that individual must understand that that respect is only a starting point and justifying (enhancing) or losing that respect is subsequently down to them and their actions thereafter.

Bringing this to the referee issue, players might not respect the person themself but they ought to at least respect the position s/he is holding. I don't think anyone turns to refereeing to be Mr Popular as that's unrealistic and naive but at the minimum players / officials should at least respect him / her as the referee. Decisions will often be made that are unpopular with and misunderstood by players but that is the nature of the position and the responsibility that comes with it. Some understanding of that might go along way with players plus better education in terms of the laws of the game.

With regard to talking to players, referees often have different (and better or worse) man-management skills and styles than others and are better able and more comfortable in dealing with the issues this sometimes brings. However, it should be remembered that the captain does not have a right (or entitlement) to speak to the referee - it is advised that the referee use the captain as part of a stepped approach to dealing with issues. I don't think they are many referees who would constantly and consistently want to entertain questions from the captain about their actions / decisions. Conversely, would the captain expect everything he did / did not do to be queried by the referee?

Intershminter mentioned that he found it unusual not to be told the referee's expectiation of him and his team - whilst some referees might have some guidance for you as captain surely you know what your role is and the responsibilities that brings? Personally, all I tell the captains is that they know their players and who their potential drama merchants are and that I expect them as captain to grip these blokes before it becomes necessary for me to do so and, finally, not be to drama merchants themselves!

Game has been called off tonight already even though I know someone who has just been past the pitch and said it green and looks good so don't know what's happening there

I agree with everything redrup said about last nights game. I thought lammas wanted it more and deserved there 3 points. That was the worst i have seen Frimley play, although missing their captain and meps its no excuse. The 9 for lammas was the best player on the park by miles. Going to be interesting to see who wins this league, certainly wide open.

For anyone Frimley Green on here last night - went to watch Carshalton Ath. Reserves v Pld Wilsonians last night (who you get in the 1/4 final of Surrey Cup).

Old Wilsonians won 2-0 and aren't a bad step up. Pass the ball around, move off it very well to! There a little bit slow indecision making but they won't be as much as a walkover as there name suggests.

Beat our reserves (3-2 but easy) in an earlier round then Epsom Athletic. Excellent team but by no means the best in the AFA!
