Happy Xmas

Recommended Posts

Why have so many amateur 'talent' contest competitors started doing crap cover versions of Beatles songs?

That lezzer off Fame Academy destroyed Lennon's Imagine, and somehow won the final. Then a load of them, unbelievably encouraged by Sir Paul, sang Let It Be whilst swaying arm-in-arm.

And now, this morning, I find out that the Pop Idol finalists are to record their interpretation of Lennon's absolute classic Happy Xmas (War Is Over), which is probably the finest Christmas record ever made.

And I can just see these muppets now on Prime Time TV on a Saturday night, all dressed in white, cosying it up round some 18ft Christmas tree, completely destroying it.

When will people realise that there's no point in trying to improve on perfection? It's bad enough when someone good like Oasis covers the Beatles (their version of Helter Skelter was appalling) but when these talentless students and part-time till-operators from Wilkinsons start doing it, it's a fking insult to people like me, and I take offence.

FK OFF YOU SCARFING, TONE-DEAF LOSERS.

I didn't think the Oasis cover of Helter Skelter was that bad.

Noel's live version of Ticket to Ride is pretty good.

Worst Beatles cover version has to be some Americal metal band doing a cover of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. Absolutely f..king appalling. I couldn't believe what I was hearing!

Whilst we are on cover versions who were the complete muppets who did a dancey cover of Duran Duran's Ordinary World. That was a f..king disgrace!

Agreed about Duran, YA.

The Oasis cover of Helter Skelter was just soooo dull - plods along and I almost fall asleep. And it's a rock song for fks sake. Why did the guy with the most bland voice in rock (Noel Gallagher) sing it, as opposed to Liam, who could've done it so much better justice.

Noel - you're a top songwriter mate, but for Christ's sake, stick to backing vocals.

Yeah that's true. I found it a bit strange Noel sang it but they were playing it live before it was ever released on CD and Liam always sang it.

And while we're on the subject...

Top 5 Worst Oasis Songs Ever!!

1. Helter Skelter - as above

2. I Hope I Think I Know - dull rubbish from the Be Here Now album

3. Little James - embarrassing ode to that dog Kensit's son

4. Sunday Morning Call - more dull rubbish, and Noel sings it too

5. Cigarettes In Hell - trite

This list is sure to upset YA and Chubbster. I am a big Oasis fan, but the occasional shocker has slipped through the net over the last six years or so!!

Nope mate I agree Oasis have done some bad songs. The lyrics to Little James are embarrassing. I thought 'Girl in the Dirty Shirt' was the worst song on Be Here Now. Going Nowhere isn't that great and Magic Pie is a very overblown effort but considering some of the other [****!!****] that is currently in the charts these are masterpieces!!

Love Magic Pie, YA. That was my favourite on Be Here Now for years! Those first three tracks on that album I think are great - it's just the rest of it that's sh*t!!

For those who don't know, here are the puke-inducing lyrics to Little James...

Little James

Little James, we're all the same

They always seem to look to us

But we weren't meant to be grown ups

Thank you for your smile

You make it all worthwhile to us

You live for your toys, even though they make noise

Have you ever played with plastercine

Or even tried a trampoline

Thank you for your smile

You make it all worthwhile to us

I'm singing this song for you and your mum that's all

'Cos it won't be long before everyone is gone

Sailed out to sea, your mum you and me

You swam the ocean like a child

Life around us was so wild

Thank you for your smile

You make it all worthwhile to us

I'm singing this song for you and your mum that's all

And it won't be long before everyone is gone

I reckon if you take the 12 songs on Be Here Now, plus the b-sides from its accompanying singles, you could actually make a well good album...

1. D'You Know What I Mean

2. My Big Mouth

3. Magic Pie

4. Stand By Me

5. (I Got) The Fever

6. Be Here Now

7. My Sister Lover

8. Flashbax

9. It's Getting Better, Man

10. All Around The World

There you go... much better than the original!

Zeal I would probably add Fade in/out to your list for Be Here Now. It sounds OK on CD but is f..king amazing played live.

My Big Mouth is a quality song. Blew my speakers out playing that too loud!

Certainly even Liam will admit Little James was pretty appalling but definitely Better Man and Born on a Different Cloud are quality songs.

Agreed about Little James. But I read in an interview with Noel Gallagher, that he knew it was [***!!***] and shouldn't go on the album. But he felt that if he rejected Liam's frst attempt, then that would be it, he wouldn't come forward with anymore of his songs. And if that had happened, we wouldn't have had those 3 fantastic tracks on Heathen Chemistry!

And about Noel's singing, his voice is very specific and suits more gentle songs. I mean his vocals on Talk Tonight (how good is that song?!),D'Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman, Sad Song and Don't Look Back In Anger just make the songs work so well. The problem is he keeps trying to do songs that don't suit him. He should stick to the soft, sensitive songs!

I think Noel is trying to add a more rockier aggressive edge to his singing. It worked on 'Force of Nature' as it's quite obvious despite Noel's denials that, that song is about Meg Matthews.

I thought 'Full On' the B side to 'Sunday Morning Call' was a good vocal on a song that Liam would have more than likely done the vocals.

Helter Skelter though didn't really work.

Noel is better suited to singing acoustically. His versions of Live Forever and Slide Away played acoustically are nothing short of excellent and bring out another side to the song.

On the odd occasions Liam has sung 'Don't Look Back In Anger' (Knebworth springs to mind) he has ruined the song by singing it too aggressively. Certainly as Chubbo said Noel needs to stick to the sensitive ballads and the acoustic numbers and let Liam loose on the up tempo numbers that requuire a bit of attitude.
