On a very wet pitch, with rain falling throughout, Grays started strongly, forcing two corners in quick succession, and keeper Joe Woolley made two excellent saves, with two other opportunities going narrowly wide, before Hornchurch began to come more into the match as an attacking force.

 

And it was Hornchurch who almost went in front with their first attack, when Lewis Smith, captain for the first time, gained possession on the left, and neatly lobbed George Kamurasi from the edge of the area, only for the ball to roll fractionally wide of the far post.

 

And Kamurasi was again in action after Frankie Curley had headed on to Lewis Smith, again out of the left, and this time the goal bound shot was turned around the post for a corner.

 

Grays still enjoyed the better of the territorial play, and Woolley, playing in spite of an arm injury, was often called into action, rising well to hold dangerous crosses from both wings, and again saving well from Joe Sweeney.

 

At the other end it was James Love, playing further forward than normal, who twice went close, the first shot skimming the bar, and the second being well saved by Kamurasi.

 

Andy Tomlinson and Frankie Curley were dominant in midfield, and Hornchurch began to force the pace.

 

A minute before the interval, it was LEON McKENZIE who gathered possession, and he carried on, rounded Kamurasi, and calmly slipped the ball into the net from a narrow angle.

 

Changes were predictably made for the second half, and Tambeson Eyong came on to play in midfield, along with Sam Cutler, whose through pass to McKenzie ended with another good save from Kamurasi.

 

As the rain persisted, and conditions became heavier, Grays lost much of their first half dominance, and McKenzie almost added a second goal when he again ran clear. It was Kamurasi once again who came to the rescue of the visitors, diving to turn the ball out for a corner.

 

Tomlinson, Smith and Curley then combined to give McKenzie an opening. Leon ran on, drew the keeper, only for his shot to roll inches wide of the post.

 

Paul Goodacre, who, along with Reiss Noel, had prevented Grays from getting into an scoring chances in the second half, then limped off, and was replaced by Rimmel Daniel, who moved to left back.

 

LEON McKENZIE was in unstoppable form, and he calmly finished off a cross from Lewis Smith from the right, after Reiss Noel had played the ball along the wing.

 

McKenzie then went off, to be replaced by Joe Wright, with Tambeson Eyong moving up front to play alongside.

 

TAMBESON EYONG went close, before adding he third goal in the last minute, when he ran on to a Frankie Curley header to glide the ball home.

 

An excellent performance from both sides, in extremely difficult conditions, though the visitors noticeably tired in the final quarter of the match.
