Reserves Division 2013/14

Recommended Posts

My nephew played in an u/21 league and it lasted 5 minutes because players wouldn't commit to it, often the players who don't make it on a Saturday turn to Sunday football with their mates and also by then hormones are sticking out of their necks and that becomes far more important than football.

over my many years in the game its disappointing to see the amount of reserve teams that have folded due to the cost. rather then start a brand new u21 league why dont we just change the rules of the current reserve leagues similar to what has already been suggested. ive seen guildford city have started up a reserve team albeit just friendlies from what i hear. do any other clubs have plans to bring back reserve teams? perhaps if a sponsor came in and offered prize money for winning the league etc. money talks after all!

Good to see some sensible posting on here at last. I like the under 21 league but can it work?

Friendlies may be the way to go with two clubs sharing all the costs?

Keep the ideas coming.

A lot of clubs in the Suburban League have very young teams these days so I don't see the need for a separate U21 league. It's only putting limits on clubs. I think the Allied Counties League were considering something along these lines. I don't know if the idea's got off the ground or not.

I had an idea for reserve team football that I passed onto the CCL and Surrey Elite Leagues before the season started - why not merge the two reserve divisions and have an east/west split or something?

This season Epsom Athletic and Mole Valley SCR are in the CCL with their reserves in the Elite Reserve Division so the concept isn't too ludicrous.

There would be issues regarding who runs it but they could be overcome if there's a will.

I think this would help lower sides as some Elite teams keep their reserves in local leagues such as the Aldershot & District and Surrey South Eastern Combination. I assume this is because they don't want county-wide travelling for their reserve teams which you can understand.

I can't speak on behalf of Camberley Town officially but I think the club is quite happy to stay in the Suburban League. The travelling can be a pain sometimes (Leighton Buzzard on a midweek night!) but most of the time it's fine. The standard of opposition is good and you get three officials every game which, despite the cost, is probably a good thing overall.

No disrespect Luke but players who are good enough to play CCL Prem will be playing at the same level or maybe just above, there is this stigma about flooding reserve team players into a given 1st team well in my opinion it very very rarely happens that any reserve team players make a 1st team at this level, don't forget mate I have managed quite a few teams in the CCL including the Ash utd reserves who were runners up and champions of the CCL reserve league (plus 3 cups ) and shall i tell you how many of those players played for the 1st team, not one.cos they weren't good enough

Fair enough but remember when I first started coaching at Cove Ressies when you were doing the firsts with Koo? There was one match where Koo called up 7 players, and all did well. We had likes of Chris Bone, Baha, Bemal, Harry and Zac, all who would regularly get called into firsts. This is where you shoot me down in flames lol but I'm sure that has got to be classed as a success...

its bedfonts first season in suburban but they seem to have off more saturdays than are playing could they be re structured so teams have more games there a mile of teams close enough to do this i dont really see the point in having the leagues with only a handful of teams in each!!

possibly friendlies agreed or more cups so there is a bit more consistency on the playing side!!

why play in a friendly league when you can play in a competitive league ?

Up North I think they have an U19 and U21 league as well. I agree a lot of teams have a lot of younger players so the surburban isnt far off. If you have a decent set up with a youth team I think it would encourage them to continue playing to try and get into the 1st team.

Yer he was at Walton Casuals Jonno. Harry is at step 4 club as well.

Newby I totally agree re lack of games, last year at AGM I said we all want more games, most the room agreed with me yet they still said 'no the clubs want less games'. I think it was to appease the conference sides. The suburban will be a great league again if they just go back to 3 leagues and scrap prem b, most the teams in prem b are local (Walton clubs, Camberley hanworth, north Greenford) etc so travelling won't be a problem.

Clubs can always look for more ways to make money at ressie games. At Hartley we have that football card thing where u put in a quid and if ur club is drawn out you win a tenner or whatever. It's no great shakes, but it's £30 back to the club so the cost of an official. As Tesco said every little helps....

Luke/ newby marvel

main trouble regarding fixtures is that in the division you are in it seems that in the early part of the season , the 1st xi's seem to all be at home in the league and the various early rounds of the FA comps and therefore a lack of grounds avl...i can advise that if a ground is avl for a game on a saturday it wil be used. To make up for the smaller league, we have the shield that is run like the champions league , and this will start shortly...Luke..your club have advised that you dont what to enter that....

i can advise that the committee are always looking at ways to make the league better for ALL clubs...

cant say anymore ..but................................

Could the U21 home games be played 'under the lights' on Friday evenings?

That would allow for the 1st Team to play at home on the Saturday afternoon (once the pitch has had a 'going over') and for Ladies/U16s teams to play at home on the Sunday.

Tony, cheers for your response. I wondered how long it would be until you popped up! Hope your ok mate.

Mayor - Most suburban sides these days are effectively under 21 sides mate. The only difference in playing Friday nights would be the added cost of playing under lights.

Luke I love your enthusiasm and I know you genuinely want these lads to do well but I would love a pound for everytime someone has told me how great a youth team player or reserve team player is and then when they have played 1st team football they have been sh1te,nobody slips through the football league net anymore so what you have left is the lads who quite honestly are nothing special.

Duncs, knowing people and some of the players at Football Finder, there are plenty of players who do slip through and find it almost impossible to get back into the game.

In their squad, they have a former Everton goalkeeper, a former Oldham left-back who played 15 times for Oldham last season, a former Lille right-back, two former Watford strikers and a former Ebbsfleet striker and Stoke City trialist. They've slipped through, and no side at Step 3 or above is interested in them.

It's not as if they haven't tried to find clubs either - all have posted their Football CVs to clubs and only a quarter of these clubs even bothered to acknowledge their letters. It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than to find these lads a club.

what does it tell you,I had one at Frimley Green a lad who told me he had played for Hull city he even had the tracksuit and big coat with Hull city badges everywhere when it came to a match he couldn't pass water when I passed him down to the ressies he lasted 2 games and then we let him go

i have to agree. alot of players exaggerate or completely make up the clubs theyve played for. these days managers dont read cvs because most of it is a pile of dogs! back on the subject of reserves. i think the suburban is a better bet then breaking off and creating a CCL league purely on the fact that just because a first team is in a league doesnt mean a reserve team should be restricted. eg a 1st team in a ryman league doesnt mean their reserves are good enough to play in a ryman reserve league. if that makes sense. atleast suburban is open but i do agree we should get rid of prem B and the east/ west divide looks a good idea. really what your looking for is atleast 16 teams in a league or a game every other week minimum!

Granted there are a few 'Walts' in the game, Duncs, but there are a lot of quality players out there who aren't getting picked up.

Maybe a 'Home Counties North' and 'Home Counties South' league could be built with three/four divisions for teams. I know of a few teams who are looking at leaving the Suburban League, so maybe now is the time to make this new league reality.

It's called debate. If there's enough people who want to form a new league or change the current Suburban League structure then change will happen.

In fact, do something creative and YOU create the league then Chubby. About time you did something constructive rather than being a mouthy fart of hell.
