MIDDLESEX SENIOR COUNTY CUP

The Middlesex Senior County Cup provided an entertaining open match that somewhat surprisingly, given the numerous chances created, only produced a single goal. Some early crosses from Scott Ensom were easily dealt with by the Bedfont defence. The first of Hanwell's attempts on goal fell to Doug Kisuule latching onto a through ball by George Davis. Outpacing the last defender, the Bedfont keeper Alex Wines got a hand to the ball forcing it wide and Doug's ball back across failed to find Pither or Denis and they were unable to capitalize. Bedfont took the lead in 11 min after a long ball on the left found Jack Beadle who ran at Scott Ensom, feinting left he cut back inside and looped the ball high over Charlie Fanner for the lead. Trying to respond immediately Ricky Pither shot straight at the keeper and another effort from Ricky from Scott cross was easily saved by Wines. Bedfont should have doubled their lead on 28 mins when Jimmy Stanford made a run and delivered a perfect cross behind the Hanwell defence for Joe Jackson who running on to the ball prodded it past Charlie but fortunately past the post. An intriguing battle between Aston Ventour and Kyle Watson produced some fast and furious challenges that were mirrored throughout the contest, Hanwell having to respond to a physical approach from the home side. Doug got wide and crossed and another Pither shot was blocked and Denis was unable to get a shot in following up. It seemed inevitable that the pressure from Hanwell would lead to an equalizer but a combination of poor finishing and bodies on the line from Bedfont prevented their goal being breached. A shot from Luke Kenny forced a sharp save from Wines knocking it over his crossbar Hanwell continued to press and a short free kick in their own half from an offside saw a neat passing move between Dean, Scott and Doug on the right The clever build up finally set up Ricky Pither in the middle whose shot was again saved by Wines. Bedfont took a more direct approach as Joe Jackson outpaced Dean from a Wines free kick shooting off balance and wide of Fanner's goal. Following suit a long accurate ball from Ensom direct into the box found Denis making a fine run but his touch let him down as the ball ran free to safety. A through ball from Terry Smith to Ricky Pither saw him round Wines who had forced him wide and he couldn't pull it back to Terry backing up as the ball was scrambled clear. A fantastic half for the neutral seeing Hanwell have superior possession, far more chances to score and arguably the better passing game but Bedfont direct and tough in the challenge with the advantage by the single goal. Bedfont made the first change 10 minutes after the restart Hodge replacing off Rasch. Stanford picked up from Ventour in the personal contest with Kyle Watson. Ricky Pither tracking back to his own half carelessly gave the ball away to the sub Hodge who did well to ride the sliding challenge of Dean and as Kennedy and Pither closed he managed to slip the ball sideways to Joe Jackson in support who side footed it past the advancing Charlie and past the post. The ref Sukhvinder Gill took the time to speak to one or two players with their respective captains to ensure the full blooded commitment in the challenge didn't boil over after a series of free kicks in midfield. He was finally forced to show a yellow to Dan Lucas for what seemed the umpteenth foul on Kyle Watson. He looked Hanwell's most likely outlet to getting the ball played upfield quickly but was invariably cut down as the match became stop start. Lucas was shortly replaced by George Baldock on 67 for the home side . Hanwell refreshed the line up by bringing on Chris Mills for the largely ineffective George Davis and Bill Healey for Doug Kisuule. The changes seemed to disrupt Hanwell and Charlie made a one handed save to deny a shot from Rasch after the ball was played though in a great scoring position. A ball swung in by Stanford forced another save from the Hanwell keeper Charlie Fanner. The ref calmed down a heated moment between Luke Kenny and Bedfont Captain Adam Turner, who was impressive on the night. Kenny almost engineered an opening back healing a ball to Pither with his back to goal, who turned and shot wide. Ollie Duffy replaced Kyle with 15 minutes to go. Hanwell forced a series of corners and a short move to Mills led to a Denis shot saved by Wines. Healey offered more movement up front and his flicked ball on to Denis, created the best chance of the second half as he bore down on goal but a last ditch tackle by Marks saw the ball run harmlessly to Wines. Any inkling of a penalty shout was waved away and players acknowledged the passing of a glorious chance of an equalizer. Ventour played a long pass to Baldock who struck a poor shot off target. Ollie Duffy and Charlie provided the comedy moment as the ball was being shepherded back to the keeper, neither taking charge resulting in Ollie poking it past Fanner for a corner. It could have been and almost was much worse. As the players tired Mills collected the ball in centre midfield and charged forward skipping past tackles and shooting low and wide as the goal opened up. Azagba was the tactical sub replacing Stanford for the final minutes as Bedfont ran the clock down to the final whistle. There is a boxing expression that the best fights to watch are those between a fighter and a puncher. For all the fight shown by Hanwell it was Bedfont who struck the single killer blow and proceed onward in the Senior County Cup meeting Northwood away in round 2.
