A couple of FA Vase reports from another forum

FA Carlsberg Vase, Second Round Proper

Takeley 0(0)-(0)1 Hertford Town

Station Road, Takeley nr Great Dunmow, Essex

Attendance: 143

Admission: £5. Programmes (normally £2) had sold out

Also purchased: Burger £2.50

Was worried I would have to make a last minute change of plan, after my car spent just shy of 2 hours at the garage before passing its motty, as well as having to prepare the house for impending visitors. Just about had enough time to make it to West Essex with about 15 minutes to spare.

One of those games today where one side wasted so many chances to reach the last 64 and found the goalkeeper in the form of his life, whilst a rare attack and a moment of brilliance decided this encounter. A bit of a shock, with Takeley doing well under Steve Castle in the Essex Senior, and Hertford struggling in the Spartan South Midlands Premier, and until the sudden goal, that gulf was clear to see. A great result however for the several dozen travelling fans who made the short trip along the A120 and created a great atmosphere, with drums, horns and chants throughout the 90 minutes. Takeley also got in the mood with a series of red and blue balloons to represent each colour, though off course today, their strikers were rather, off colour.

The hosts dominated for most of the first half, harrying Hertford all over the pitch, with the visitors unable to get out of their half for long periods, also inviting pressure on themselves by continuously giving the ball away. It took a while for Takeley to create a clear cut chance, and when they did, the Hertford goalie was defying them - including a deflected shot from outside the shot which he somehow kept out with his outstretched foot, and then another flying save to push a long range goalbound shot behind for a corner. The away side barely threatened at all in the first half, and it was a miracle given the amount of possession and balls into the box that they were still on terms.

Hertford started better in the second half, with a bit more attacking threat, despite being set-up with just no.9 Sam Stock up front. However Takeley continued to create numerous chances, somehow not converting a scramble inside the Hertford box, then an agonising albeit bad miss when a shot at a slight angle from six yards came off the inside off the post and rolled across the goalline before being scrambled clear, and from that clearance, on the break, Stock was through on goal, but put over. The away keeper again earnt his wages with another superb save, diving low to stop a shot finding the far corner, whilst the visitors had another escape when a defender almost headed a cross into his own net. More guilt edged chances went begging for Takeley, when another scramble was not converted, plus a free header six yards out was horribly miscued wide, and an unmarked player from the same distance badly mishit his shot when he should have scored.

Hertford were living a charmed life, but out of nothing, with fifteen minutes left, took a shock lead. A long ball was brilliantly brought down and controlled by Stock, who then fired a superb low drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner to send the away following wild. Takeley were absolutely stunned, and Stock nearly put the game to bed on the break soon after when put through, but under pressure shot just off target. The hosts pushed forward in the closing stages, even throwing the keeper up, but two more fine saves at his near post by the Hertford keeper kept them at bay to deny them Extra Time.

Jubilation at the final whistle from the Hertford players who did a mass dive in front of their own supporters, whilst Takeley were on their knees, head in hands and beating the turf, completely perplexed as to how this Vase tie got away from them.

Although it is still annoying there is no clubhouse at the ground, the food is of a nice standard. The hot dogs looked like proper big meat, and the burgers, although small, were baked in the oven and better for it.

Ampthill Town 1-0 Diss Town

FA Vase 2nd Round

Only the one area of cover here, elevated with two old dugouts underneath it. The clubhouse houses a good tea bar (and regular bar too).

As for the game, not as entertaining as the earlier one. Defences on top for the most part, and for the first hour looked as though it could be goaless all the way. Then came the key incident when a player from each side came to blows and a yellow card shown to each (I think), resulting in Diss down to 10 men as their defender was already on a yellow. The last half hour was all Ampthill, and they had a few good chances. In the end only one was converted, in the 89th minute. Had it not gone in, the game had the look of the possibility of an unusual lopsided AET score.

Ampthill also managed an impressive 22 ball boys.

Has not started well for us. A GK error for one and second out players schoolboy error stop as they thought ball was out of play. Play to the whistle. Shocking start. Lot to do try and salvage anything even with new personnel similar errors appear to keep happening. What I'm told over text by the way as I type message Hateley booked for two footed challenge resulting free kick their no.9 taps in. We have not even turned up. Very disappointing

was that George in goal for you

Yeah. He's done really well for us. Made some outstanding saves, just one of those things any sort of mistake a keeper makes gets punished like that. He certainly not alone in our side making a mistake or two. Second goal for instance it's criminal to stop as a player just because you think ball is out of play. Bad 15 minutes killed us mate. Done now, move on they'll train hard and have to put it right on Saturday

Perry for the sack ? How long if you think they will give him ?

No mate chopping and changing no good. He was handed a mess frankly and certainly last few weeks there has been improvement and some good signings. I think he will get the time he needs. Committee ballsed it by bringing him in late. Everyone still fully behind him, can't get anywhere without support. This season is about trying to finish as far from the bottom as we can next season expectation will be higher.

I see from another Forum that Ampthill scraped through yesterday, congratulations:

But once again I am too late in stealing the report from another forum as this report was first posted last night at 8.54pm

Saturday 17th November

FA CARLSBERG VASE Second Round Proper

3-7 Hatfield Town v Ely City

A report on this predictable result from another Forum:

FA Vase 2 : Hatfield Town 3 Ely City 7. Admission £6; Prog £1. Attendance about 75

I quite enjoyed the Gosling Stadium. The pitch is surrounded by an athletics track, then a velodrome so you're a fair way from the action. To contra that, the seated stand is quite elevated and is built into the adjacent sports hall, and in front of it is an area of decent elevated terracing which still gave a good view. Not quite as good as the balcony view (keep your ticket) from the clubhouse above from where I watched the second half - hence hard to estimate the attendance as you couldn't see one area from the other.

Hatfield scored a peach of a free kick to go ahead on 7 minutes but Ely had already started much sharper and by half-time were 5-1 up. Two more by the hour and they coasted with Hatfield scoring twice in the last four minutes for scant consolation. Plenty of goals in today's vase matches it would appear, as long as you avoided Takeley.

Pit stops at The Crooked Billet in Colney Heath and the Station in Woburn Sands with a good chippy up the road.

Wrong again.

Football Man was at my game.

I suppose that's because it involved an Essex Senior League Club
