We must value the freedom of the press and other media. However with freedom, comes responsibility and accountability.

The BBC was once beyond reproach in its even handed reporting and political fairness - unfortunately that is no longer the case.

Personally, I think it went downhill, when middle aged reporters stopped wearing ties !!!!

BBC's director general, George Entwistle has resigned.

Not surprised there, Ian.

Mark Thompson needs to be brought back to answer questions too IMHO.

I agree, and it is sad that this once bastion of the media is now more of a b*stard.

The BBC IMHO went downhill when it stopped reporting the news and tried to be the news.

Entwistle was a total buffoon though wasn't he and completely out of his depth in such a high profile job

I think that Thompson was quick to shift the blame on to somebody else. Entwistle was the fall guy in all of this.

Even in the office of The New York Times, there is already dissent as to Thompson's appointment there - I would not be surprised to see him forced to return here very soon. If he is complicit, then he can kiss goodbye to the high life - I just wonder who else he will have to squeal on.

Hold onto your hats folks, this is FAR from over!

at least with McAlpine he had the opportunity to face his 'victims' and show them up for the money grabbing fraudsters they are, Saville was never given this chance, not defending Saville,a odious creep but all this nonsense regarding child rape at the BBC,we need to stop encouraging dusturbed fantastists.

Actually Entwistle worked for the BBC for 23 years and achieved quite a few promotion in what can only be described as a glittering career. After such a long time at the BBC its difficult to understand why he was offered the top job if they didnt think he was up to it, as they must have known his capabilities.

Had they sacked him, or he decides to sue the BBC for constructive dismissal and takes his case to a tribunal I would imagine the years salary he walked away with would look like small change

Don't forget the Peter Principle! They keep promoting you until you find your personal level of incompetence.

Which might help to explain why certain M.oD. filing clerks have never been promoted!
