Travel to Mansfield

I've posted about this before but I always planned to make my first Slough Town game the next time that they qualified for the FA Cup and they have now so I'm considering my options on getting to Mansfield. My mum and family are from Slough though they moved to Scotland years ago (my nan died this summer so seems like a better time than ever to go to a game).

My only option is the train and getting to Mansfield before the game is fine. The only issue is getting back. It looks like the only train I can get back is one that leaves Mansfield station at 17:14 (Mansfield to Nottingham to Derby to Edinburgh meaning I have to go south before I can head back up north).

Will the game definitely be Saturday at 3pm and do I have any chance of making the 17:14 train? From what I can tell on google maps, the station looks close to the ground.

Didn't help matters when I read this http://www.footballg...sfield_town.htm "Away fans have been known to have been left stranded in Mansfield, and have struggled to get home'."

There is also a bus to Edinburgh at 17:50 but I'm definitely not doing that. Mansfield to Birmingham (sit in Birmingham for two hours) then to Edinburgh totaling 13+ hours...

Hi - Mansfield fan here - I'd be surprised if it took more than 5 minutes to walk to Mansfield station from Field Mill - cross the retail park car park next to the ground and there's a footbridge across the Portland Street dual carriageway direct to the station. (For anyone driving, don't park at the retail park - you'll exceed the time limit and will get a ticket - ditto Sainsbury's and the cinema on Nottingham road - better to park on one of the side streets off Nottingham Road).

If you're coming from Edinburgh, it may also be worth checking the East Coast mainline to Newark Northgate - think there's a bus from the station to the centre of Newark (10 mins max), then a bus to Mansfield bus station - probably about 40 minutes (it's an extra 5 minutes walk from the ground, past the railway station to the bus station on Stockwell Gate). Hope that helps.

Good luck for the game,

P.S. Bring your neck brace, and maybe forget about picking a midfield!

Am I right in assuming we'll be able to buy tickets from the ground on the day? And will be able to get in with a rucksack? I plan on taking something to read on the train...

My planned journey is:

Edinburgh to Doncaster 08:00-10:52

Doncaster to Retford 11:26-11:39

Retford to Worksop 12:02-12:13

Worskop to Mansfield 12:38-13:10

Mansfield to Nottingham 17:14-17:48

Nottingham to Derby 18:08-18:31

Derby to Edinburgh 18:44-23:10

I would consider the Newark option but, as long as I can get to the station in time for 17:14, I think this way will be easier as I just need to change trains rather than get buses as well. I have a railcard so it will come to £79.75. Next hope is that the trains on the way down aren't delayed but I'd rather not get the 06:55 train.

Can't believe I'm actually going to do this.

Train is going to be a nightmare.

Slough to Kings Cross (45 mins)

Kings Cross to Nottingham (2 Hours 43 mins)

Nottingham to Mansfield (33 Mins)

I hope the club does a coach travel because i'd rather sit on a coach for 3 hours.

Rather you than me!!! At least we've got a station now! Assume there's nothing direct to Retford from Edinburgh?...and you can't retrace your route to get back?

There's only two platforms, so the one you get off at travelling south from Worksop will be the same one you use to continue south to Nottingham

I've not seen any announcement about tickets yet - www.mansfieldtown.net is the official club site, and has the ticket office number (01623 482482). Don't think the rucksack will be a problem, but they'll check it before allowing you in.

Also, have a look at the fans site - www.stagsnet.net - there's a lot of information there too.

I hadn't checked the journey in much detail; just put in Edinburgh Waverley to Mansfield Station. There is a direct train from Edinburgh to Retford but it gets in at 12:08 so I'd miss the 12:02 train to Worksop and have to wait until 13:03 to leave and not get in to Mansfield until 14:10 and I'd rather be there early in case of delays.

The last train back retracing the route looks to be at 14:57 unfortunately.

Thanks again for the advice.

Good luck to Slough from an Ashford Town (Mx) fan and former resident of the Gosport area.

Good result tonight - good crowd, amongst whom were a few of my former schoolmates. Gosport are a very decent team, as are Mansfield. I will be watching your progress with great interest.

All the best.

would imagine will be more than tonight so at least 150+ hopefully. really depends on how inspired by the cup the less diehard fans are and whether they will want to travel that far. whatever the number im sure the Slough fans will make themselves heard and have one hell of a time. REBELS REBELS REBELS!!

I assume Mansfield is all seater? Can we try and make sure us diehards and big gobs are all sitting together to get the atmosphere going. I hope as many Slough fans old and new come along and this is the perfect opportunity to entice a few more to league games, but be great if all us regulars are all together to spur the team on.

Crawley Town also gave out free or reduced price tickets for some of their league games after they played Man United in the FA Cup. Might be worth thinking about some ways to entice the floating Slough fan - there seems to be a lot on twitter.

And i'm sure Sue is ordering more scarfs, bobble hats etc as I type.

250 minimum I would think

249 ! because I won't be able to go! An engagement I can't get out of. Sod's bloody law!

Absolutely gutted but elated for the team, management and fans at the same time, for the stunning win last night.

I truly hope we win up there but from a selfish point of view wouldn't mind a draw on the 3rd with a replay on the Tuesday night at Holloways Park and of course,a win on home soil.

Can but dream.
