Guernsey v Horley Town (Boxing Day)

Its always been tradition in the 10 seasons ive been in this league to have a local derby game on the festive period. But i suppose we are guenseys most local league opponent.

Allways looked foward to a local derby game on boxing Day fall out of the house and walk round to South Park was ideal or a short trip down to the New Defence. Was not looking foward to a 6am start at Gatwick Airport on Boxing Day!!!!

You would have had another hour in bed as first flight from Gatwick leaves at 8.30 so checkin at 7.30 :)

Would be interesting what the views would have been if the roles had been reversed... Certain members on here would have crucified GFC for once again getting specialist treatment. I am pleased that common sense has prevailed.

It is interesting how people talk about a local derby on Boxing Day being traditional. We've only played three times on that day in the last 16 years and last played in 2006!

Do I detect just the slightest tinge of cynicism, Trevor ?

I just find it amusing that clubs seem to have thought, when voting, that it was just about an all expenses paid piss up on a Saturday. Of course there will be Boxing Day fixtures and midweek fixtures. If Guernsey get to the latter stages of the Vase and we have a bad winter, there will be a number of midweek fixtures I would imagine and why should Guernsey have to play twice over a weekend? Will Horley now moan if they have to go over on a Tuesday night in February?

If the member clubs didn't think this through properly when voting then that's their problem, not Guernsey's or the league.

Once again it seems to me that GFC are bending over backwards to do everything possible, including playing twice in 48 hours. I can see some midweek matches already with the amount of fixtures still awaiting dates....

As TRS has said, if clubs/members here could not see the strong possibility of midweek trips to the island then that is poor. Was always likely to happen sooner or later.

Hi trs, to be honest it would be lovely to go boxing day and play guernsey, but i work shifts and am working christmas night and boxing night so can not play in guernsey. Im not the only player on shifts at our club. Also i have a young family and would like to be with them if its ok with you.

Its good that common sense has been used in this, Christmas is a time for familes and going over to Gurensey boxing Day would have been a nightmare, I bet no other Club in Combined Counties would have wanted to go either.

I agree, the point I would make is that some on here would not have been happy if GFC had said they would prefer not to travel to the UK to play*. I think commonsense has and always should previal.

* I do recall someone from CCL saying they thought GFC would have no problem with playing on Boxing Day last year had they been asked to.

This does raise several issues though. If no-one wants to go on Boxing Day (and therefore it's unfair to expect Guernsey to travel), are we saying that Guernsey should not have a Boxing Day fixture in future years? (whatever league they are in). From a Guernsey point of view, this will deny them a bumper crowd probably higher than average whereas a midweek rearrangement will probably give them a lower than average crowd. Carthorse, you say that no-one would want to go and I wonder how clubs are going to react if they get handed a midweek away trip? Work issues will no doubt come into play then as well.

Short of extending the season into June to ensure all Guernsey home fixtures are on a Saturday, I don't know what the answer is. All I know is that it was always going to happen eventually.

I personally don't think Guernsey would have bumper crowd on Boxing Day as there is not much history of sport being played on this day here, unlike the UK. As far as I am concerned GFC play when they are told to as per the rules of the League and whatever conditions are attached when and if GFC move up.

This is only our second season and with a couple of extra league games, postponements and also a good Vase run problems were always likely.

I have always thought some mid-week home fixtures were always quite likely.

Of course, if the Muslims had their way, Christmas Day would be cancelled, then so would Boxing Day !

Problem solved.

Simples !!

Going back to a point E&EEd made - there has only been 1 CCL fixture played on Boxing Day in the past 5 seasons (Hanworth Villa v Bedfont 2009), so not as "traditional" as some may think.

There's some of us that would gladly go to Guernsey to get out of a trip to the in-laws

Thats you of yet another Christmas-Card list, NLN !!

Very true of the Muslims here (and most of them I know of do celebrate it - saw three last week getting their Trees at Over Farm!)

It was said in jest, folks !

Anyway, the Jews have their Hanukkah around the same time but usually spread their festivities of the Christian Christmas festival.
