Enfield Town vs Cray Wanderers

I'm just glad that entry was half-price today. Although, having said that, £5 was probably a bit dear for the display Town put on today. I usually make a habit of holding-off from any comment until the next morning and the dust has settled, but this is a necessary exception.

Town are giving away far too many soft goals. How many clean sheets have we kept this season? Less than two! The goals conceded today (excepting the penalty) were the result of pretty dire defending. Imber was completely distracted by 3 Cray players running out from a position in front of him and then failed to pay attention as the ball was looped into the bottom-right of the goal - he didn't move a muscle. The second Cray goal saw a low cross from the right evade the first Cray player attempting to connect with it, only for one of his on-rushing team-mates to blast it home. This was symptomatic of Cray being first to most second balls.

The centre of Town's midfield (Ewang & O'Brien) run about alot and I'm not faulting their endeavour. However, they produce very little in terms of end result. They do not control proceedings and dictate play.

Today's game was one of those we need to be taking points from. If we're not winning our home games against sides like Cray, then can we really believe that we'll go to Bognor, Concord, Whitehawk... and get something from their grounds?

I fear that Steve is trying to find his feet at this level and it might be too big an ask...

Was the start of this match delayed today? I ask because our half-time score didn't appear on the non-league vidiprinter untl 17.09 and the last goal, attendance and final result only appeared at 17.44!

We are out of our depth. It's very clear that many of the current team are not up to the job in the Ryman Premier. The general level of skill and technique right throughout the team is not able to cope with teams who put players under pressure and who give our players little time on the ball. The result is that we are not able to cope in defence which is looking disorganised and panicking often. The midfield cannot control the play, regularly playing balls into congested areas and thus giving the opposition attacking options in dangerous positions, thus causing more problems with a defence already struggling to deal with fast running and strong opponents. The forward line is simply not working, long balls played to Guns are not working. Liam not getting service and the wing play below that required.

This display was probably the most depressing bearing in mind Crays position in the leaugue. There appears to be little that we can do with the personnel available currently. What was Steve trying to achieve substituting Liam with Brian. It appears that we are doomed to endure a season fighting for points but on this performance relegation is looming.

I know that finances are limited, but the directors must make some difficult decisions very soon. Invest in the team, change strategy and the management or face the prospect of a long hard winter.

Apart from his last sentence, I think Crowing Cockerel has got it spot on. We cannot afford to keep conceding three goals at home to mid-table teams around us. I appreciate that the team plays an attacking game but frankly, we cannot defend. When the person who ostensibly lines up as the holding midfielder is regularly up on the edge of the opposition penalty area, or even in it, the defence becomes exposed and teams seem to be able to easily by-pass what midfield we have. The last two goals against East Thurrock were, from my position extremely poor defending and all goals today could have been avoided. Even the last minute penalty occurred when the forward was moving away from goal towards the corner flag and should not have been conceded. We barely won a defensive header all day and find it difficult to clear our lines. The attack will score goals but they cannot be expected to keep getting winning scores when we leak so many at the back. 4-3 is an exciting scoreline but it doesn't happen that often.

During my time in London, I have shared a season ticket at The Emirates. I compare what is happening with ETFC with Arsenal. Last season they had a very creative and attack-minded player in Alex Song. He was always up in attack BUT he was nominally the holding midfielder. He simply didn't do the job he was picked for. This season they have a player, Mikael Arteta, who is disciplined enough to play that position and not to wander and it has helped the defence no end.

On a personal note, unfortunately this may be the last ETFC game I get to see before I head off back to Australia. Our 2 year stay has been cut short by 5 months because we have to get back for our daughter's wedding. I will be away next week and the fixture list has at this stage conspired against me seeing another game. I went to the last game at Brimsdown, and even though I was born in the next street, it was a far cry from the QEII Stadium. The club has come a long way in eleven short years and everybody involved deserves all the credit for getting the team where it is today. I will have seen 63 matches at all levels in the 19 months I have been back, by the time I leave. I have some great memories but the Play-off final against Needham Market will linger as one of the best of those memories.

I will be following every game as closely as I can. The Cold End's brilliant videos will help in this regard.

I wish the Club every success.

Still early days of the league season. However I think the assessing of whether the current playing squad can compete at this level or not is over. The answer is a clear yes they can but some regular starters will need to be dropped for the next level and able players to be brought in. Now thats a tough ask cos quality costs money.

Bizarrely i'm enjoying the football this season, much better games and players on view, we just need to improve our starting X1 in 2-3 places.

Looking forward to my day out at Bognor with optimism.

As I see it the bottom line is for both the last two matches ( east thurrock and cray ) if we had done two things, one taken our chances and two not given away poor goals because of our poor decision making / individual errors we would have won them both. Noel wasn't overworked in either game and the opposition keeper was the busier in both. Yes we should be the team in the ascendency at home against this type of opposition. I agree with some of what is being said , Steve may have some tough decisions to make but after only 8 league games it isn't all doom and gloom. I can't quite believe that some thing Steve might be out of his depth , but I suppose we are entitled to our opinions. If any of us really thought it would be plain sailing this season then we are seriously in need of a reality check. In my view it is simple defend better , you can't legislate for silly mistakes and we have enough going the other way to win matches at this level.

Not too sure what you mean EU. You say the players can compete yet some will need to be dropped for the next level. They may be able to compete, but we need to stop making basic mistakes and put the ball away. The next level is a long way off in my opinion. Yesterday's performance was not as good as many of our games last season which shows we need additions to the squad to compete. I know better players cost money but I suspect that our budget is not the smallest in the league and other teams are able to attract these 'better' players. Need to be creative in enticing players to the club.

The results don't lie

Worst defensive record in the league.

ineffective attack

Not sure how many goals we have conceded in the last 5 minutes of each half (Jim?)

we sign a player older than Ryan Giggs - really!

We have started to play some decent stuff in midfield, keeping and passing the ball; bit with little result upfront and when we lose it we are caught out.

Budget[ please let's not use that excuse........we have the fences are covered in advertising hoardings, two stands are now speonsored, the race night rasied money, we have gates that generate a decent income for this level plus we have earnt money from the FA cup & Trophy,

We have not gained a league point since August

So in light of the facts, it doesn't bode well

League performance since 21st August.

One point from the last 18 available is not good by anybodies standards.

4 home defeats on the bounce is not good enough.

We are currently a Ryman North team "trying to play" at a higher level and unfortunately several of the squad are not up to the required standard to keep the Club at this level. It was stated that last seasons squad would be "given time" - fair enough, but after 11 games ( 8 league and 3 cup ) we have won 2 league and 2 cup and drawn 1 league.

We have kept one clean sheet v St Margs from a lower level.

In 11 games we have conceeded 22 goals and scored 17.

However in the League from the 8 game we have scored 10 and conceeded 17, being an equal worst defence with bottom side Thurrock.

Hendon sit in 21st place just 1 point behind Town but with a game in hand.

Town have the pleasure of being 22nd in the current "Form League"

Changes need to happen if the current poor run is to stop and after Wednesday, we face 4 tricky away league games on the bounce, mixed with 2 away cup games.

We are of course doing okay in one league - the Attendance one, where we sit 8th with a healthy average of 363 from the 5 home league games - so why is there no improved budget for the Playing squad ?

We cannot all be the Manager ( who would want all the flack ? ) but I could not understand why at 1 - 2 down and needing at least a goal to get something from the game, we take off our centre forward ??

Its a funny old game. - Lets hope for some good signs v Brentwood in the League Cup on Wednesday and then Bognor on Saturday.

I know this is a game of opinions and opinions always come out when a team is not doing well, but I have to disagree about our scoring record - 17 in 11 is not bad at a higher level. It's the other end that's the problem. We have created heaps of chances in the last two games. We have to work out a way to keep some clean sheets. Personally I think the real problem is in midfield. It gets overrun too easily and this puts pressure on the back four. Look how quickly (and easily) East Thurrock and Cray were able to transfer the ball from back to front. It was though our midfield was not there. Too often, it's stranded up front just behind the strikers.

This is not to advocate a negative approach, but there has to be a midfield shield in front of the backline and it has to be disciplined. When Claude Makelele was playing as a midfield shield for Mourinho at Chelsea, I don't think he ever went over the halfway line in 200 games but was he effective.

yes its a simple game

Keep A clean sheet, you don't lose

Score one more than the oppostion you win

We can't do either, and there is no sign of things changing

A player whom helped AFC Hornchurch to the play-off final and promotion last season. He was a fan's favourite and their manager spoke very highly of him when he left Bridge Avenue. From the games I've seen i think Hunt will be a very good addition. I hope his injury is not too bad?? Any updates?? He clearly has a love and passion for the game to be playing at this level at nearly 41 years old.

I wasn't at the game yesterday but I think we are there or thereabouts..... Like we all knew we were never going to win the league. The results will come i'm sure of it.

I was there Saturday and it wasnt a 3-1 type of game. The penalty at the end is not important. I thought the new signing White did well when he came on and looked a good addition. I believe he's a centre half but i thought he did well at left back and a defender with a left foot will add balance. I actually thought he did better than Bardle who seems to be intent on continually diving in and has little composure on the ball. Where was Siva though?

Wallace's goal was a good team goal from Lockie and Hope and will give him confidence. Why at 2-1 we took Liam off for Bryan I dont understand? Surely it would have made sense to take off a defensive player at 1-2 chasing the game and keep your attackers on the pitch? On top of that, if we are going to replace like for like then ok but is Hammatt really a good enough replacement these days?

Agree with all other posts, we do need to be more clinical in front of goal but the real problems lie in defence. I have certainly noticed that at the next step up, there is a bit more of a physical presence and element to it and we seem to have struggled with this to date - Bishops Stortford being a prime example. Perhaps we need to look at adding some physicality to our defending?
